4 Months Jail for 'Offensive' T-Shirt

Either the public of Manchester where he was walking about or passing cops who, contrary to popular belief by public and defence solicitors, ARE legally protected when it comes to Public Order or Breach of the Peace offences....
So the BBC are surely committing an offence as well by publishing it?

One thing is for sure, he'll be wandering into the prison showers tomorrow morning thinking 'Ah......actually, in hindsight......maybe that wasn't my best ever idea'.

So if I walked about with a t-shirt on the same day your wife/child died saying "Good news, Craterload's kid just snuffed it, Brilliant!" then you would be ok with me getting a slap on the wrists?

Freedom of speech and expression must be protected in all situations, apparently. Not just when it suits some and not others.

Who did he incite and if it was so serious, why are the BBC repeating it?

1. Other people of equally questionable mental function.
2. Because in a rare showing of actual journalism, the BBC has reported the cold facts rather than a watered down version that treats its audience as children who cannot possibly learn what_actually_happened without going into hysterics.

Unlike religious hatred, homophobia and racial abuse, where it is directed, this guys seems to have stated he is happy that a police person was killed. Thus the one less pig in the world. I don't read any incitement there. I read his personal statement (disgusting as it might be) not anything other than his comment.

Also as it is a teeshirt, its hardly social media, so discussing social media laws won't overly effect this decision. It might outrage the public, but then didn't Enoch Powel do the same many years ago? Don't the BNP do that now, don't the EDF and Muslim this that and the other group. They're not breaking their suspended sentences.

Waste of my taxes putting this chump in jail, you really want to annoy him and make him suffer, then give him hundreds of hours of cleaning out canals, or something actually worthwhile to society.

I remember Cradle of Filth brought out a t-shirt a while back with Jesus is a **** on it. Dunno if anyone got arrested wearing that. But regardless this bloke is a total ****.

Thats in the US, we don't have a freedom of speech act or law here, it doesn't fall under Human rights unless you can claim you inability to express yourself is supressing yours rights as a..... (name minortity or opressed group) being a human doesn't count, you have to be different or individual.

So you wouldn't mind if I wasn't convicted for my aforementioned theoretical example? As you seem to suggest that the guy in the OP post should not have been convicted.

Part of incitement is getting others to instigate a crime, in this case something like someone assaulting him.

Absolutely ridiculous ruling. The Americans have it far better than us when it comes to these situations. It's always cliche to bring up Orwell here but it's still worth saying that we aren't a million miles away from 1984

I am unaware of any social media laws, so any change in law is likely to extend outside social media. Even if the discussion is based on social media, any change in law is extremely unlikely to be limited to social media.

No, i would think you were a douche but that’s about it. Ultimately it's his opinion, he apparently doesn’t like the police and is happy there’s a couple less of them.

Seems kind of hypocritical our government is preaching all over the world about freedom this, that, yet we lock up people whom we disagree with
