MSI GeForce GTX 670 OC TW PE stock clock speed question

I bought a "MSI GeForce GTX 670 OC Twin Frozr Power Edition" yesterday and core clock goes from 1019 MHz to 1079 MHz like the specs says

but then sometimes I notice it goes to 1228 MHz ( usually heavy demand apps/games like Unigine 3.0, Battlefield 3 )

Is this normal?

I don't do overclocking so no questions needed related to me manually overclocking

What I'm asking is, the 1228 MHz ( which is not stated in the spec ) normal? as in normal behavior for it to go over the 1079 MHz...

but I guess post 5 answer my question

Yes it is very normal. My clocks are stated as 1006MHZ and boost 1059MHZ but I get a boost to 1202MHZ.

We can only speculate on what the driver uses to calculate what the card should run at, although we know some possible variables.

Since each card will potentially boost differently to others of the same type under certain conditions the manufacturers just specify the minimum you can expect.

Not sure whether they bin the chips before or after the card is constructed though.. Or whether nvidia bin the chips? who knows..
 
nvidia do bin chips to a certain extent (in the GK104 chips are produced and tested and they then get made in to 680's, 670's or 660's)

however they don't test and bin them within those, that would be down to the card makers (if they bother)
 
drops down to 1215 MHz when at temp 70c

need a new computer case... I'm eye balling the NZXT 810 case

temps are 50c - 70c... thats playing DOTA 2, Team Fortress 2, Battlefield 3, Starcraft II and Guildwars 2. Highest was 76c but I heated my room on purpose with door shut and thermostat set to 30c

Tried to mimic summer heat. I do this with every Mobo, CPU and GPU I get

I'm impressed with this card. Damn fast, damn quiet, easier to physically clean ( dust )... my last GPU was a BFG GeForce GTX 260 OCX Maxcore... not easy to clean and crashed a lot after 80c - 85c ( never seen it above 85c )

Glad I bought it... I was questioning it for the past 5 weeks :p

not bad for £300 ( can't say where on forums ) GTX 260 cost me £263 at the time from OCUK

Yep... nice little card these. Think you will see an improvement on the load temps with a better case. Mine in a Lian Li PC-B25FB never goes over 60C, usually high 50's in game (Alan Wake, Witcher 2, BF3). Though ambient room temp up here in "sunny" Scotland is a bit on the cool side at best (ha ha).

As you say, prices have softened a bit since they first came out, making it an even better buy.

Plus the added bonus that these are one of the few cards that you can add extra voltage to. Use Aterburner version 2.2.3 rather than the latest (as this is voltage locked).

With a bit of extra juice, mine will hit almost 1300MHz. But no point at the moment running an OC, at 1080 on a single monitor (with the games I play) everything runs pretty much full tilt at stock.

PS. I like the look of the NZXT 810. Nice simple styling... that's how I prefer a case. Flashing lights etc. are fine on a Christmas tree :D

key reason why I want that case ( NZXT Switch 810 ) is because I can put ALL of the cables behind the tray and the way the HDD/SDD bays are... again... cables out of sight of the GPU so thats going to be excellent for airflow. I can also work with this entire case from front and back. My current case is Antec P182 starting to have issues with it already

Great case and easy to put everything in :) Tight squeeze on the right hand side with all my blocks there though but still closes easily :)
