Microsoft Surface RT Priced

I bottled it when it came to getting my Lumia 800 and went black. After seeing my mrs swap the back on her Lumia 710 for cyan I've vowed never to play it safe again.

Cyan does look ridiculously sexy, tough choice. I think I might hold off on the tablet front until I see how well this gets supported. If it's going to be all about the apps then it'll need a good library to make me consider it over the App Store on iOS devices. Still... that cyan keyboard. :p

The App Store is small ATM, but roughly 100apps a day being added, ~4500 apps currently.

Loads of the big names have allready confirmed apps, or have apps released allready. Best things is to make a list of apps you want and see if they exist.

For example a few of the big names to allready confirm
Instagram
Angry birds
Audible
Netflix
Spotify
Splashtop
7digital (Spotify like company)
Firefox
Nook

One advantage Microsoft have is the excellent Visual Studio, and tons and tons of .NET developers.

Plus with Azure they have a decent platform for developers to host services on, overall its a much better supported system then Apple.

Then you can port existing code form Xbox or Windows.

So I think getting the devices into the hands of users cheaply enough is the biggest problem, the developers are already there.

Thanks for the info guys, as long as the main apps are there then that'll be enough for me. I use my iPhone mainly for the browser, Last.fm, Sky Sports News, BBC News, Amazon, Sky GO and some catch up services like 4OD and iPlayer. I'm imagining that the majority of those will be on the Windows Store if they aren't already on there right now, plus I'm expecting the browser to be nicer than the browser on the iPhone which I find to be a chore to navigate, maybe that's down to the small screen size though.

So they're going head on against Apple with virtually no brand value (I mean that in the sense that people just don't find MS a desirable product) and hardly any applications? This will flop.

How is a 20% cheaper product head on?

The cheapest Surface and iPad are both the same price? Yes the Surface has more storage, connectivity and features, but as many Android tablets have proved that's not enough to go head to head with Apple.

That said I think and hope it's going to do well, although I wouldn't be surprised to see a price drop at some point.

399 compared to 479 for equivalent models. ~20 saving.
Compare like for like.

Pricing is slightly disappointing, was definitely hoping for something closer to nexus 7 price. I know it's bigger, but still, it's not as premium.

iPhones and most mac products are overpriced in terms of hardware, (and typing this on my iPad, I really don't mind that). So when competitor products come out, I feel like they shouldn't pitch so close to apple. Hence why I was really hoping a base surface would be in the £200-300 bracket...

Don't get the lack of 3G hate... I already have a perfectly good 3G device in my pocket capable of both wifi and Bluetooth and USB tethering which goes everywhere with me. Why would I want to pay for a second 3G contract?

I've never understood the appeal of 3G tablets.

Battery life, data plans and price. Far cheaper ATM for me to have one on giff gaff and one on pre paid 3 SIM cards.
But mainly battery life and easy. It's not an utter deal breaker for me, but close.

Then for mass market you have simplicity and off course how are they going to sale contract plans?
Which will also mean a lack of phone shops pushing the product.
