ASUS MATRIX HD 7970 Platinum Video Card Review

From what I read the power tune limit comes into play with these cards at 1.3v and above, even though they will do 1.4v. I think the power tune 20% limit is removed on the lightnings LN2 bios isn't it?

If its true then there needs to be a bios release with powertune limit removed so these can be more useful for extreme over lockers.

As far as I know You can remove all protection on these cards by joining two jumpers in Hotwire section with solder or wire. Protection does not kick in till around 1.45v anyway.

Humbug, we've not seen any 7970's that do 1400mhz on air, fullstop. Regardless of PCB or cooler, so stop flogging a dead horse please. Let's carry on with discussing this great card

But, but, but... I heard a rumour that reference 7970's can do 1400 Mhz quite easily which means there must surely be no need for this card?? :D :D

Well I have had several reference 7970 and my best did 1395 with 1.35 on water. On air I doubt it very very much.

 hope you are right, can't wait to see what clocks you can get with the card :)
Won't the soldering void the warranty though?

Yeah and so it should you cant expect warranty putting 1.45v + through a card.

The best 7970 do not like extreme cold they loose display at around -80. The Rotary single for this one I think.

My results will be up on here.

Mine is on its way!!!!

Lucky sod!!! Looking forward to your results, what's the shipped voltage cap on these?

Edit: agree about warranty and over volting. I wouldn't expect any warranty should I ever get above 1.35v.

EK might make a block, they have a good relationship with asus...

Time to do some digging on the vrms if 1.4v is the limit :D

Overclocking then, again impressive results. The MATRIX PLATINUM obviously already is factory overclocked and if you compare the reference R7970 at 925 MHz on that core clock and then compare it with this 1100 Mhz product .. then all I can say is .. wow.

But due to it's exemplary PCB and power design there is room left, if you manually overclock without voltage tweaking 1200 MHz is viable. However with voltage tweaking 1275~1300 MHz can be achieved quite easily. Mind you that this is based on an overclock with the air cooler with the ventilator RPM speed left at default. If you increase fan RPM then the 1400 MHz is something that comes in range.

But they didn't actually achieve that overclock reading the review Masai. They're saying what you can do without actually doing it.

I'm sure my 680 will push 1400 MHz.....

....if nVidia didn't block over-volting :p

Wow, sense of humour failure, sorry, i did not know your having a bad day.

Not sure what is funny about what you've said? Perhaps I'm having a bad day as well? :)

Nobody is going to buy a 680 classified over this anymore, that's for sure :p
I expect the price to be around £400 when it gets here though. To some its worth it.

Just look at the PCB though, its what a high end card really looks like.

Wouldn't mind seeing a head to head.;)

Is that for me?

Thats right, it achieved 1325MHZ on 3Dmark 11, that's not ~1400Mhz, so yeah it is an exaggeration at this time, but at the same time 75Mhz (5%) short of anything up to 1400Mhz (~) is a bit anal and petty.
Especially given that comment is months old, you must have trawled through 500 or more posts of mine to get at it, or did you hang on to it for this time?

I mean why is that so important? it seems insane to me.
