Microsoft Surface RT Priced

The point is; if it's strong enough to support somebody skateboarding with it, then it's strong enough to survive a fall from the sofa/bed/cupboard/whatever.

Sorry but they're completely different forms of strength. Just because it can hold a load, doesn't mean that it will survive a drop, at all, they're just not comparable scenarios.

I guess, it can't be any worse than an iPad anyway, I dropped my grandmother's iPad from the sofa to the carpeted floor and the whole top left corner cracked.

Weird currency conversion, should be more like 0.75x$, not 0.8x$. Then the prices would be a bit more affordable and it could really compete against the iPad.

Not saying that they're very similar, though, iPad has the ultra sharp display, with a somewhat better aspect ratio for web browsing and general tasks (not movies), and App Store, which has proven to be the most successful mobile market out there.

It will be hard to beat, but the Surface RT has a chance to do so IF the developers will come forward and make the best of it.

The keyboard cover is great, but I wonder how stable it is when you put it on your lap or uneven surface.

I think Surface is overpriced, whether you look at the weird currency conversion or its placement against the iPad. It's an overinflated market anyhow.

I guess the RT will work with 3g dongles, not very neat but a workaround I suppose.

Not very cost-effective either.

Pricing is slightly disappointing, was definitely hoping for something closer to nexus 7 price. I know it's bigger, but still, it's not as premium.

iPhones and most mac products are overpriced in terms of hardware, (and typing this on my iPad, I really don't mind that). So when competitor products come out, I feel like they shouldn't pitch so close to apple. Hence why I was really hoping a base surface would be in the £200-300 bracket...

You do realise the Surface is not only bigger but made entirely of magnesium alloy? The nexus 7 is smaller and built to a price with plastic... Hey, you can even isuse the surface as a skateboard. :P

Disappointing battery life though... The MS website says 8 hours... Most good tablets are in the 10 hour range.

First shipment of 32 GB Surface RT tablets sell out, now on 3 weeks back order

MS News

It seems the prophets of doom may have been wrong about demand for the Microsoft Surface, as the cheapest of the 3 packages have now sold out on pre-order, and have gone on back order.

The $499 tablet, sold without the touch cover, is now on 3 weeks back order (which presumably means about 2 weeks after the other Surface tablets are delivered).

Microsoft is rumoured to have ordered up to 5 million Surface tablets for Q4 2012, so hopefully this level of interest will continue and help make the RT platform a success.

Is this going to be a proper "PC" as such? I.e. will it be able to play games (not necessarily graphics intensive games) but DirectX games nonetheless?

Or is this Windows RT akin to something like Windows CE back in the day?

Windows RT (Surface) won't run x86 / x64 applications. However, the Surface Pro will run x86 / x64 applications. That said, Windows RT runs a Windows 8 Kernel, it will run Metro applications.

Yes thats what I thought....

Metro apps is the new MS appstore?

And presumably one would not be able to install their copy of, say Office 2010 on this since it needs the "RT" version so to speak?

Yes, Metro apps are available from the MS Store.

Surface comes with a full copy of Office 2013 RT.

Yes, it is. It will also cost £800+.

It's targeted to replace mid-range ultrabooks, while providing all features a tablet would.

Given that it runs full fledged x86 hardware and not ARM though I imagine the battery life will take a hit... heat output too... compared to the RT version anyway. This is just speculation on my part of course.

I think in a few years we could really see a post PC world, with these windows tablets you get the best of both worlds. Right now its not perfect, but I think soon we could just all be using a windows Pro tablet.

Have a dedicated GFX card in the dock, like the current Sony Z series.

Although the Post PC era will be for the vast majority of people, there will still be a few people that need/want desktops around. For example those that do CAD and other high end processing work. You'll still need workstations (and a few people may want super duper gaming machines), the standard desktop PC however may well go the way of the Dodo.

So very tempted by the RT. The resolution is questionable (why no 1080p - assuming performance issues) but it's a stunning device and may be worth getting to see if I can cope with/will actually use a windows tablet over my MBA. I currently have a touchpad with Android on it but rarely use it.

I agree there will always be workstations. I use my PC for CAD/rendering and video editing. No tablet would ever be good enough for this as desktop PC hardware will always be far more powerful and customisable.

As for the res on the Surface RT, MS explains that res isn't everything here

They also did blind tests on journalists comparing the Surface to the new iPad, and most thought the Surface display was clearer and sharper.
