Windows 8 The Verdicts ?

Does anyone know how in Metro you get to put titles above the application sections, eg, Music, Productivity etc.... As I've seen in some pics in these forums, mine are all blank?

Thanks :)

hhhmm, it seems to forget my speaker setup after a restart, set to 5.1 last night, try today and it's at 2.1 and have to go back and set 5.1, a bit annoying, plus the 59.94hz in battlefield 3 where as in 7 it was 60hz

It forgot my network driver as well on reboot, had to un install it from Device Manager then re-install it then it worked

Zoom out in the Start screen (small "-" sign in the bottom right corner. You can then rearrange the groups of apps and right click (on a group) to name it

Having downloaded and saved as ISO on Friday I finally bit the bullet and installed 8 keeping all my preferences/Apps/files etc.

It installed with no errors and all my programs like Window Live Mail were as before.

Perfect

I'm currently resisting the urge to install as "START" button and trying to get used to the new interface, gotta say though it's tough! Can't help feel that METRO is just a bolt-on front end that is more suited to a "touch" device than a desktop PC.

Admittedly this is down to personal preference but I think most people doing this are only making things harder for themselves in the long run, if for no other reason than when you use a different machine, laptop or when the next version of Windows comes out.

why isn't there little red Xs in the top right hand corner of each of these, just an ugly "Close/Snap Left/Snap Right" dialogue, ugly!

Because a small close button would never work in a touch interface and I think more importantly, you really don't need to close those apps.

What's the official way of making the address bar appear in IE? I have to press back, is that the only way?

Also, does the tile shortcut to IE not share the same settings/cookies as IE when you open it from the win7 style desktop?

I think I would like it if it was more win7 style with the old start menu, but I do like the new win8 tweaks, just not the tiles, which would be better suited on a tablet OS.

Right click to bring up the address bar/tabs and I assume on a touch screen slide from the bottom up, on a desktop you may want to set IE to always open on the desktop (Internet options > Programs).

The more I use Windows 8 the more I like it , it just takes a bit of getting used to at first, the boot times are super fast.

If there is one minor gripe I would say I don't like how they have the metro and desktop UI , They should have gone all the way and just had metro UI

I actually do believe that this operating system is the worst one ever to be released my Mircrosoft. My laptop easily meets the specification requirements, but it keeps crashing upon reboots. Only way to reliably use it is reboot in safe mode, then you have the joyful fun that safe mode does not support driver installs/program install/uninstalls, so what is the point of Safe mode these days? To say it is there? ****.

New Start Screen is going to be loved or hated, I have issues with that but I could get over it, having an Operating System that whether I fresh install or upgrade it from Windows 7 crashes on startup, says it doesn't support my monitor (1366x768 LED screen) and doesn't allow me to do anything about it is a very poor OS indeed.

For those of you who will blindly defend Windows 8, if it works for you, fine, but I've had enough of tying to get this stupid OS to work. Also, I am NOT moaning about METRO. I actually don't mind the idea too much, I am moaning about both a **** safe mode and bad drivers from Dell, AMD and Microsoft. They've had absolutely ages to get these right before release with the Preview versions but they haven't.

I wouldn't have bought it without a desktop. Not a chance.

If you are interested in that kind of set up keep an eye on what happens with Windows RT. If anything is going to go all-in with Metro, it will be that version.

I'm wondering whether they will do a flavour of Windows RT for intel SoCs.

I think Win 8 is successful for its target market of tablets but alienates a lot of PC users because of the confusion between the 2 UIs.

Finally seems to be running after disabling the display adapter + monitor via safe mode, installing beta drivers, re-disabling automaticly re-enabled monotor and crossing my fingers. Still don't trust it but we'll see how it goes.

LOL. I retract this statement as it just crashed again. OK enough of this rubbish I'm gonna restore my Windows 7 image and get a refund.

Is it the Dell Studio 15 you are using for Win8? If so, were you able to install the version 12.3 Catalyst Drivers? I am using those with my ATI card (desktop) and haven't had any issues.

The only other thing I can suggest is motherboard drivers.

I would have thought the Windows 7 drivers would have just worked as the OS has only gone from 6.1 to 6.2.

Yes it is, and yes I have tried. I think it's actually more of an issue with the monitor, but then as it works perfectly in Windows 7, I am struggling to understand why in Win8 there are suddenly lots of issues.

I don't think anyone is "Blindly defending Windows 8", for some reason you are having problems with drivers on your PC, I've not seen much evidence that a large percentage of people are having similar problems.

There's people that don't like the New Windows start screen and some of the changes but nothing really about any kind of wide spread driver/crashing problems. Doesn't help your problem I know, but then neither does ranting that it's a "stupid OS".

It sounds like a video driver problem specific to your laptop. Have you checked if Dell have released Windows 8 certified versions of the drivers yet? You say you have a problem with the monitor, is this the laptop display or an external screen? Again, have you tracked down W8 drivers for it (or at a push W7?)

If it's saying it's not recognised you may need to make sure OS management on plug n play is enabled in your bios. Can you set the monitor as a default screen with the appropriate resolution?

Just to add, there's a bunch of people here happy to try to help you solve the problems if you want to , ranting at us as people who "blindly defend", "stupid OS" "worst OS MS have ever done" is probably not going to help.

Your call and feel free to vent, but gives us some details and less mr angry and maybe people here can help? Just sayin'

I bought 8 last Friday, first thing in the morning! I've tried the various re-release versions and found the system for desktop applications to work fine. now I have the real thing I have modified the 'modern UI' screen to have just the apps I want to use plus the desktop application short cuts I use. after sorting things our and labelling the columns, I now have a single screen with all the things I use on it.

So now, instead of clicking the start button and chasing down the program I want, I merely click the left corner to get to the (oh stuff the new name) 'Metro' start screen and click the program I want. Its quick, easy and better than the old version.

I like the way the system automatically installs the updates, too, rather than expecting me to agree to things. I've told it to install updates over lunch when i am not using the machine so that's another thing sorted out. I like the 'file history' function (read old backup) which copies files I use to a spare drive and also saves various copies at different stages of editing. That should be really handy.

So, overall, for me, I big improvement and no real downsides.
