Win8 Tablets

Microsoft have always done badly at marketing. Not having at least display devices available on launch day means they miss all the media hype who will move on to something else and the actual tablets will miss out on free publicity.

They used to make good software too but I think that department was taken over by their marketing department looking at windows 8. Oh no I didn't!

And a loyal fanbase in both the consumer and media space to rely on to create a massive hype. Just look at something like Engadget that had about a dozen articles about Apple products the other day however only had a single post about the livestream of the launch of Windows 8... Yes it was announced before but still...
 
Currently thinking about swapping my Macbook Air 11" for a IdeaPad Yoga 13".

I need a core i5, and the resolution seems good 1600x900 not 100% sure how good Desktop apps would be on say an 11" with full HD screen, and I don't want a 1366x768 display again.

Plus I think ram is upgradable so I can get it to 8GB.

£660 inc tax in the USA at the moment for the i5.

Noticed on John Lewis they have a UK price for the i7 (http://www.johnlewis.com/231740087/Product.aspx £999)

Price seems decent, for what you get.

Been using an iPad for uni work for the last few months and starting to get annoyed with it! Most people print out the lecture PowerPoint and then make additional notes. Thought a Windows 8 tablet with stylus support would be fantastic, as I could take notes and store the files in OneNote, but now we've been left waiting for all these Clover Trail tablets!
 
I was in a couple of shops the other day and they all told me they will have Win 8 tablets some time next month. Wouldn't even give a specific date. One of the guys said Win 8 isn't even out until next month (lol).

MS are opening Surface Centers though, but for the UK they're all in London which is amazingly stupid, and each only seem to be open for a couple of days next month ...

I've never owned a tablet before so am looking for some opinions on which to go for.

I fear Windows 8 tablets might be out of my price range, I don't want RT because I want to install whatever I want to on it. What Win 8 tablet do you think will be the best for around £400? I can't spend more than 400ish and want one with a keyboard dock that provides more battery life and allows the tablet to be held up for watching videos.

I would love a Windows 8 tablet as then I could probably install some of my older windows based games on it but I've seen that most will cost as much as an ultrabook.

If decent windows 8 tablets are out of my price range, I have been looking at the Asus TF300T which is at the very high end of my price range (400). This runs android but I'm not sure if I should wait for a decently priced Windows 8 tablet to come out similar to the TF300T if Win 8 is better than android for browsing the web, watching videos when travelling, connecting to my TV through hdmi to watch videos (avi/mp4/mkv/etc or rar'ed videos), controlling my PC, playing games and other uses I may have for it (those listed are the main ones).

£400 for a full blown Win 8 tablet is stretching it at the moment. The nearest to that is something like the Acer W510 (Intel Atom based) for £499. The next one up is the Acer W700 i3 based at £599.

I certainly wouldn't go and blow nearly £400 on a Android TF300T if you want to play older windows games as it kind of defeats the point :p

Like others said, £400 for a Win 8 tablet might not be enough right now, but if you wait a few months i'm sure there will be Intel Atom based tablets in that price range, that will run older Windows games fine. Plus it will work with literally all mice/keyboards/gamepads.

As for videos, Win 8 is obviously far more capable than Android here as if something don't work by default, you can simply install a codec pack or any video player. Android has players with support for many file types but they wont be anywhere near as capable as Windows software. I think a Atom based Win 8 tablet would also be great for running console games on emulators.
 
Thanks guys. I think I'll wait to see what comes out and at what price. Really wanted something before I go away to France skiing in mid-late December but the smart thing to do is wait and see, must resist the urge to impulse buy one I regret later.
 
I have a Acer W500 tablet with windows 7 which is on its last legs now , need a new one . i'm looking at Lenovo Thinkpad 2 which i like a lot but i just need to know if its worth the upgrade , if it will be much better!? is the processor much of a difference?

From reading about that it seems pretty decent and most of the other Win8 full tablets seem to be upwards of £750, shame they didn't make it look a bit prettier though. I can probably stretch to the £550 64GB version with keyboard (unless getting the extra 32GB space is pointless) by December. Looks like I have around a month to save for my new tablet! :eek:
