Win8 Tablets

Can anyone tell me how much difference it'll make getting one with an Atom (Clover Trail) processor to one with an i3/5/7, will it be a lot smoother in general usage (for instance having multiple tabs open in my browser or having a few different apps open)?

I don't plan on playing many 3d games on it but what do you think is the most technically demanding game can Clover Trail manage (could it handle something like Lara Croft Guardian of Light). What kind of games could the higher spec (i versions) tablets handle? I just want to know if it is worth the extra £100s to go for the higher spec versions of some of these tablets (I'm considering now getting the Samsung 500T or the 700T).

I would imagine clover tail will handle multiple apps fine. Think off it like a slightly more powerful arm CPU which runs old windows software. The gap between atom and i3 is massive. I posted some benchmarks somewhere. Iirc i3 was about 3 times better than the atom. But double check that.

I5-3317u 3035 in passmark
I3-3217u 2264
Atom z2760 @1.8ghz 679 note all the tablets are running it and 1.5ghz though.

For comparison the desktop i7-2600k is 8629

From reading about that it seems pretty decent and most of the other Win8 full tablets seem to be upwards of £750, shame they didn't make it look a bit prettier though. I can probably stretch to the £550 64GB version with keyboard (unless getting the extra 32GB space is pointless) by December. Looks like I have around a month to save for my new tablet!

If you're willing to stretch to £550 for an Atom based tablet, you might as well pay another £50 and get the i3 version of Acers w700! Then you haven't got to worry about its performance.

The acer w510 tablet is finally on the acer uk website and says its available in hops if retail shops, but neither have them listed yet.

The acer W700 i3 model processor is i3-2365M 1.4Ghz
The Lenovo thinkpad 2 processor is Atom Clovertrail z2760 1.8ghz

How is the i3 processor much more better , even though its lower GHz?

Because MHz isn't everything.
It's the same reason a 3.0GHz i5 murders a 3.06GHz Pentium 4.

The frequency isn't a measure of performance.
Say one CPU can do 1.3 calculation at 10MHZ, another might be able to do 1.6 calculation at 10MHZ.

I can't see them having a different CPU for Europe. I expect they just found the specs in one "news" site and loads have copied it.

Good idea, I like the specs on that. However the cradle/stand seems really bad and the battery life concerns me, at only 8 hours compared to 18 hours when the W510 is docked. Does anyone know if the cradle/dock for the W700 also doubles the battery life or does it not have a battery in it? Are there any other 11.6" tablets with an ivy bridge processor around the £600 mark that have an extra battery in their dock to double the life?

The w700 has a desktop dock, so no battery.

We have little idea on prices for the others. But pretty much everyone with clamshell keyboard dock has extra batteries.

Main thing that puts me off the W700 is the weight, IIRC is over 1kg which IMO is too heavy for a tablet.

Stuff is up on a competitors site but not it stock.

Envy x2 - £800
Yoga - £700
Sony slider - £1000

Find it a bit of a joke that there are still no tablets out, and not even any announcements of when there will be. Microsoft are taking a hit by keeping the Surface Pro and giving other companies a 3 month head-start, and all they are doing is wasting it.

I'd like a Windows 8 tablet, but I don't want to wait until January so I'm looking at other manufacturers, but if I could order the Pro today I would, and I'm sure a lot of other people would aswell. At this rate there will be very little choice in terms of tablets in the holiday season, and we are going to see a lot of iPads being sold. How unorganised these companies are actually amazes me, Microsoft should just release the Surface Pro now, I don't care if it eats up Samsungs/HPs/Lenovos sales, if they can't get their acts together for a launch as big as Windows 8, they don't deserve to still be standing!

The Samsung ATIV Smart PC XE500T1C is available to preorder on an alternative site for £663 (and has November 23 as the release date, same as the Acer Iconia W510/700), is this a good deal or massively overpriced for a Clover Trail tablet? Will it run something like Worms, monkey island remakes or really old GOG games?

I like the Smart PC because of its 3 usb ports and seems like a pretty decent product, but I could get the Acer Iconia W700 with an i3 2365m for slightly cheaper. The Samsung just feels like a more quality product, the Acer W510 and W700 look a lot cheaper and I hate the 700's stand and it's overall weight, I can see it getting hot and awkward. Opinions please... :)
