Car manufacturers phase out spare tyres

No spare on my 3 series and ive ditched the run flats.

Got a compressor and a can of tyreweld in the boot. Compressor if the puncture isnt too fast, tyre weld if it is fast. If its a big hole its the AA :D

And you will probably get a bill from the AA for recovery if that happens as your inability to get home is self inflicted.

A full size spare or a space saver (your choice depends on rim size) is a £75 option on Skodas.

Mine has a compressor and tyre weld.

I've just got two cans of tyre weld in my '54 Clio 182. The exhaust system runs where the spare wheel well would be. :p

Space saver wheel here. Seems a sensible option and doesn't take up too much space - the jack and other tools are kept in a container within where it sits.

45+ mins wait fro a van to turn up vs being dead.

No, you are right, I've died at least twice now due to changing a wheel.

Anyway, these days you can't go 5 minutes without a traffic womble finding you on a motorway and setting up a 5 mile coned radius, then proceeding to offer their "assistance".

Being sat on the hard shoulder of a motorway is one of the most dangerous things you can do on the roads, being sat on the hard shoulder with your back to live traffic is even worse.

When I bought my new car last year the "standard" was a can of the tyre weld. I know that a tyre can be washed out afterwards and reused, however I also know that finding somewhere to do that is near impossible.
So for the sake of £50 I upgraded to the "Space-Saver spare with jack and tools" which I see as a total no-brainer and "throw-away" price when compared to the rest of the vehicle.

Went for a speed change approach once, wheel ended up comming off half way down the pits.

In all seriousness, i'd rather wait out of the car than risk my neck.

Unlikely judging by the amount of people that end up in this situation, but possible.

I rarely go more than 50 miles from home anyway, and the local tyre place has a few mobile fitting vans on 24 hour call out covering a 50 mile radius and contracts with the AA and RAC, so I'd simply use them if within the area ;)

Don't be so slow at changing a wheel then :p

Your not a real man if you can't change your own wheel. Saying that, I didn't look particularly manly when I had to jump up and down on the socket arm because the wheels nuts were torqued up by what seemed to be chuck norris himself!

I keep a proper tool set in my boot with decent tools.
Not a breaker bar by an means, but you cant get any purchase with those rubbish molded together bars anyway.
Irony is that I dont have the jack anyway!!
Its gone missing. theres no chance im hauling the trolley one about

Same, the only option I took out on my Civic was the spacesaver spare wheel. I have used it once for six miles but previously when I did a lot of miles I had several punctures and to go without a spare and a few tools seems ridiculous.

As has been said a few minutes to jack up a car and change wheels versus waiting for recovery is a no brainer.

I saw a car once going along on two space saver spare wheels.

a) where the hell did he get the second one from

b) how was finding another space saver less effort than getting new tyres

c) how long was he driving on one space saver to get ANOTHER puncture?

My mind literally boggled. I mean it made an actual 'boggle' noise that could be heard outside of my head.

I keep a trolley jack and some tools in where my spare wheel could/should be........slightly useless without a spare wheel mind you

You're supposed to have a serviceable spare if the car is supposed to have one in my experience. Pretty sure the AA charged me for arranging for a tow to the nearest tyre place

Theres no rules in either the mot or anywhere else about it, its just recovery companies being annoying.
What difference is there between my 306 without a spare and my mates factory standard vxr without a spare?
ZERO RAC/AA...... ZERO.....
