Around 6,500 retail jobs are at risk after electrical chain Comet confirmed that it will be put into administration next week.

Private equity firm OpCapita, which owns the 240-store business, has lined up restructuring specialist Deloitte to act as administrator.

OpCapita bought Comet last year for just £2, but the business has struggled from the downturn in consumer spending.

Businesses of all sizes come and go, it's nothing new.

When I was kid we had Rumbelows and Ratners, neither of which exist today and both closed down long before the popularisation of the internet.

The staff weren't the the friendliest post takeover nor were they sales driven...

The Internet is not at fault in this case...

Rubbish business or not, what the UK doesn't need is another 6,500 out of work. I hope they manage to sort something out - being jobless in this economy sucks.

Seems their site it toast, no longer showing their product lines or taking orders...

It's not a good situation to be in this side of xmas for the staff...but my above comment still stands.

Stock clearance coming our way? Might get some cheap deals.

Feel sorry for the staff.

I wouldn't have thought so, I imagine it will be returned to their suppliers for credit.

I worked for this company several years ago and this news doesn't really surprise me in light of some of their business practises.

Retail is a bit like the housing bubble, everything thinks we will keep on spending exponentially and things can only improve but no one plans for when it breaks.

Comet deserve to go bust because they bought out their competitors instead of improved their service/prices. Exactly like Game and half the high street.

Someone needs to slap the people that own these companies and say just because you have 3 stores in 3 close locations doesn't mean you'll get 3 times the footfall into them.

Shame for the staff but that's what happens.

Local comet is full of wannabe sales ninja, sneaking up on you the minute you enter the store and sneaking around watching every move you make. And the amount of times I've gotten 2 steps into the store to be asked how I am, what Im looking for, Would I like help, oooh have I seen this? Gnaargh

I will however pop in to check fire sales :p

You mean lying to customers to sell vastly overpriced products (I'm looking at you monster HDMI) and meaningless promises ("price matching", changing product codes so they don't actually have to match) wasn't a good business strategy?

I can't say i'll miss them, haven't bought anything there since the 90's when i was a bit clueless about tech.

Never had a good word to say about Comet, ever since I went toe to toe with the local store manager over a faulty laptop.

The "regular" staff who lose their jobs though I feel for in any business, even more so in todays climate.

So very much like PC World and Currys.

comet prices were crap so its no suprise... usuallt 10% higher than competitors , argos is the same.

john lewis are one of the few companies that actually try to compete with amazon prices.

GAME are another that will finally go soon as they are always more expensive than the other shops that sells games up here (hmv , fenwicks , grainger games)
