Win8 Tablets

Had a.play with a Sony tablet / laptop convertible in a shop... Was really nice and win8 really suited it. Almost a grand so way to pricey but first touch screen experience with win8 and really liked it.

I'm thinking of popping down to a shop to test some of them, how many tablots did they have to try when you were there?

Thanks guys. I think I'll wait to see what comes out and at what price. Really wanted something before I go away to France skiing in mid-late December but the smart thing to do is wait and see, must resist the urge to impulse buy one I regret later.

Another option is getting an older Windows 7 tablet, like the Acer w500 for about £250 then upgrading it to Windows 8, and then buying yourself any accessories.

The old Samsung Series 7 700t, which is only a slight step down from the Samsung Ativ Smart Pro, can be picked up used for £500 on eBay, and that's an i5.

I don't think the Atom tablets are worth looking at, my girlfriends Atom net book is woefully underpowered and slow. But that said I recently upgraded my dual atom media pc to Windows 8 and the performance increase is brilliant, but that's a dual core atom.

Personally I'm stuck on the w700. The i3 model is about £150 cheaper than the i5. Is there really much difference between the i3-2365 and the i5-3317?

The i3 is 2nd gen 32nm intel with hd3000 IGP and has no frequency boost beyond 1.4ghz.

The i5 is 3rd gen 22nm intel with HD4000 IGP (quite a bit faster than the HD3000) and can boost the clock frequency from 1.7ghz to 2.6Ghz

Strange, on the specs for the i3 W700 it says its got a HD 4000?

I think the confusion is in the uk we have a far worse version of the w700 than the Americans do, I don't understand why they've used different CPUs.

The other price difference between w700 and Samsung pro pc, is the clamshell keyboard dock, which will add about £170

The American w700 version is the thrird gen i5 with hd4000 or the third gen i3 with 4000hd

Saying that I can no longer see the spec sheet on acer uk site now.
Also the few uk websites taht are showing spec sheets are all showing the third gen chips, same as us spec.

But then someone did post a uk spec sheet that was indeed the old 2nd gen chip.

More confusion.

Eh? Surely it's some kind of typo. Doesn't make sense they'd down grade the processor just for the UK model.

Think I'll end up with the W700 i5 tho, compared to all the other tablets it seems best bang for your buck. Think I read its slated for the 20th or 23rd November, I've waited a year for the Win8 tabs so whats another few week. Sold in Argos of all places, hopefully they have a demo model to play with, tho I doubt it.

I'm still left scratching me head as to why there was zero tablets available for Windows' release day. I'm sure if just one had been out in time it would have made a killing.

Acer W700 does have HD 4000 , i don't know if its worth £150 more for a i5 than a i3 , i think the i3 model will do all the things needed anyways , but dont know about the difference between i3 / i5.

the difference between the clover trail atom and the i3 should be big tho?!

There does appear to be a typo on the Acer UK website on the datasheet page for the i3 version. It states the CPU as a i3 2365M, but then goes on to say it has an HD4000 IGP which doesn't add up. Which bit is the typo though, is anyone's guess, lets hope it's the CPU!

Well I've decided if my pay is good on Friday, to get an acer tab w500 win7 tablet. 250 brand new or 150-200 second hand and wait for the surface pro.
I'm just not going to spend ~1k on something that is a massive compromise.
Then when I get the surface (or something else if anything decent is announced) will give the acer to my parents.

Edit - that won't work need 1366 pixels wide. Off to find another suitable w7 tablet.

Is there really going to be that much difference between the Surface Pro and the hugely cheaper W700? They look identical in spec, expect the Surface may have the advantage in looks as its thinner and lighter.

Sticking point for me on most of the announced tablets is that very few have mobile data. A USB dongle will just look stupid and be awkward hanging out of a tablet, and the wifi hotspot dongles will just be another thing to remember and charge.
