Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Why!

I don't know why DNS server changing helped mine but it did and it's weird, it shouldn't but it did :p

i cancelled virgin and the retentions lady was a biatch.

she said the fastest speed i can get on 80mb sky fibre is 1mb because she checked on samknows.... i said well my next door neighbour has it and he gets 75mb, she said its because he is on another exchange because she can see on samknows....

lol she kept on going with lie after lie, what a dumbass... last time i ever deal with virgin

Strangely, my YouTube issues seem to have disappeared for the time being (without changing DNS settings) and 1080 and 720 streaming seems to be as fast as it was in the good times. I've also noticed a couple of people on the dedicated thread to this problem on the VM forums, report an improvement.

I will of course be ready to change to Google DNS servers if the problem starts again.

have been testing on and off all day, hasnt completely cured but nowhere near as bad as it was.

Could just be coincidence, could be virgin have played around with things, but its a definite improvement from last week.

Don't forget, Virgin DNS will return an A record for it's own search stuff where other DNS providers will return a FO.

Could possibly have an impact somehow, although I'm struggling to see it :p

Is there nothing that can be done about this abhorrent service from VM regarding youtube? Some videos seem ""ok"" but typically the one I want to watch just won't buffer... it' shocking. I was going to get VM when I move into my own place - not any more. I'm meant to be on a 30Mb connection but barely getting 10. tried custom DNS servers too

- GP

Edit - Wow. They are shocking. 24 hours of being on Virgin

- Steam doesn't work properly (Friends list/community)
- Server browsers aren't showing properly
- terribad download speeds (30 minutes t download a Citrix Receiver from their website?!)
- Youtube doesn't work for over half the videos I've tried

And virgin is ... fibre to the house? Or something similar to VDSL2?

VM cable is fairly high quality co-ax cable to the house, as opposed to most/all DSL systems which tend to be unsheilded, untwisted copper pair to the house from the cab/exchange.
If you ever setup an old network in the 90's, you'd probably be familiar with the rough type of cabling used, and why VM tend to get upset with unapproved hardware/cabling being connected:)

So whilst it's not fibre to the house, it is better than the copper pair of wires used for phone/dsl
