Hi chaps my hd 6850 is dead and ocuk have given me a credit which I have used against a HD 7850.
Anyone using one of these?, will I be happy with my choice?.

Very happy. They are great cards and have some decent overclocking headroom with a good cooler

Overclocked they are around 6950-70 speed, if not faster, so a decent step up too

They're really good cards, really good value, OC well, - get one with a custom cooler. MSI, Gigabyte, Sapphire etc all do custom coolers.

they have less stream processors I'd say even overclocked they are slower than a 6970 it's more of a replacement for a 6850 really than a 6950/6970

Yes, extremely good. Maxes all games at the moment. OC's exceptionally well. I have mine at stock voltage and it is running at 1200 core and 1450 (5800) memory.

When a decent overclock is applied, say 1200mhz they exceed GTX 580 performance. Check the Heaven 3.0 thread on here.

Benchmarks are not games and don't tell the full story firing up a game and looking at fraps for 1 minute isn't the full story.I saw a thread on here recently where a guy swapped from 6970 xfire to 7850 xfire and said it was very noticeably slower especially with min frames etc and consistency.

That is very true! I benched 3x 7850s they all got their supposed scores. In games they sucked! For me that is as i think mobo support problem.

The thing is i even benched with game benches and shogun 2 says 50fps average so i start playing historical battle and its down in the 20s you can't rely on benchmarks or scores. You can trick scores you can't trick steady gaming.

Running the games maxed out is what counts. The 7850 can easily do that, i assume also the 6970 can too. The new architecture of the 7 series puts it at a severe advantage as we have seen with the recent drivers. However i refer back to my first sentence as this is the most important.

By that I mean it's a mid range card that's in a position where the 6850 was when that came out not that a 7850 is the same performance as a 6850 the 7850 sits just below the 6950/6970 if it isn't the case why would a 7850 owner lie and say it's slower than his old 6970 often dipping to frames well below what he got on his favourite games to say an overclocked 7850 is faster than a 6970 in games simply isn't true. You have to look at consistent performance not fire p a game and take a look at fraps and declare it's faster because fraps says 5 fps more whilst standing still.Truth is a 7850 probably sits around the 6950 performance in most games barring battlefield 3.

No, the cards work totally different, its already been explained the 7850 could perform worse in DX9 games but in DX11 it works totally different from the 6970 (what ive read anyways). It handles tesseslation much better so it improves fps at higher settings, it also has more Vram and can OC much better.

Overall it is infact a better card.
