Buying a car from a main dealer

Found a great deal on a VW Golf. 1.2 TSI S model, 5 dr, registered Dec 2011 with only 15,000 miles on the clock. All for under £10,500.

This is being sold by a VW main dealer so my question is:

Do I need to do an HPI check? Is there anything I need to look out for when buying from a main dealer? Obviously I'll do all the checks I have previously done such as looking at the service log book etc...

Thanks

This is the worst Golf in the range - is there a reason why you particularly want a 1.2 S? I'd be looking for a 1.4 in a slightly better spec.

But to answer your questions you'll usually be provided with a HPI certificate as part of the deal. It's about the safest way possible to buy a used car.

There are 2 versions of the 1.2 TSI - 85PS and 105PS. The 1.2 is only available in S trim.

I'd steer well clear of the 85PS is something as heavy as a Golf.

A 1.4 TSI would be a better bet and Match trim is not too bad.

I'd have the 1.4TSI as well, but if you're set on the 1.2TSI, at least make sure it's the 105ps version as blueboy suggested.

I just got a GT 1.4 TSI 160ps on an 09 Plate with 32000miles for £10988, with the 18" alloys, auto lights/wipers, heated/folding wing mirrors and auto dim rear view (nigh on a grands worth of options over standard GT spec)...for the love of god don't get the 1.2 S for only £500 less, no matter what age it is. Shop around.

edit: Look for a 1.4 122 in either SE/Match, don't scrape the bottom on a 1.2 S just because it is 'new'. Get an older one and if the 3 year warranty is out get the Approved Used warranty.

Thanks for the advice. Found a SE 1.4 TSI (122ps) on a 10 plate with 28,000 miles and the usual: 16" alloys, cruise control, auto dim rear view, heated wing mirrors. At the moment its £11,890 but hoping to get it down a good £500 at least.

Any advice? Will be test driving this thing tomorrow!

Managed to get the car down to £11,400. All 4 alloys will be refurbed, full valet (wet vac inside), free paint protection coating on the outside, free iPod cable. Will be serviced before I pick it up.

Quick question: I've been offered gap insurance @ £300. Is it worth it?

And also, after the warranty runs out, does anyone have experience with extended warranties?

Cheers

Gap insurance can be worth it but shop around for it. Usually any such insurance through a dealer is overpriced.

I bet it's not free, I bet the car is actually something like £11,100 and then the paint protection charged on top to make the £11,400...

Potentially but not at £300.

You can buy it online for about £100. Or even less given the price of the car.

And also, after the warranty runs out, does anyone have experience with extended warranties?

The only one worth the bother for you is the VW one.
