Google Fibre in Kansas Live

TBH the dutch and french have internet speeds that are faster than ours. The UK is very low down on the list in terms of web access speeds.

You're not wrong about the Dutch, but it's worse in France on average according to these stats*:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/5500-the-shifting-sands-of-global-broadband-speeds.html

The countries with comparable population sizes are Germany (5.8Mbps), France (4.6Mbps), Italy (4Mbps), Spain (4.6Mbps), Poland (5Mbps), Turkey (2.7Mbps), Ukraine (4.4Mbps) and Russia (4.8Mbps) and only Germany of these is above us with respect to average speeds as seen by Akamai systems.

UK average is 5.6Mbps. The year-on-year increase in peak broadband speeds is also quite high compared to other nations. It's not great here, admittedly, but as the article says, overall it's not 'doom and gloom' like some make it out to be.

*as always there's a million different ways of measuring something so maybe they're better on some other metric

So it's like 2-300x faster than what we're hobbling along with :(

BT site is now showing a date that can get bt infinity now though rather then just 'Not scheduled for your area blabla'

Are there any stats for % of fibre/cable /adsl/other connections in the UK?

I should think so, I would be inclined to think that they will show maximum potential coverage (Ie the number of premises that could be connected if everyone that had access signed up) rather than actual uptake.

Hyperoptic keep sending me letters. They want to cable up our building but they need a certain number of people to sign up.

Looking forward to 1Gbps Internet when they hit that number...

surely our ranking is going to be up and down in the list as it costs a lot to put the infrastructure in, so whoever adopts first will have the best, but then those who wait longer will then have better, but in 10 years when the first replaces their own tech now they have the best, until the people who followed then replace theirs again and it's just goes like that.

of course countries will spend more then others to try to stay ahead but in general i figured this would be how it works to make it a sensible price.

other then the fact we're tech geeks so will want the best, i don't ever see an issue with the speeds i'm getting now 5-10mb if i'm lucky, as everything i do loads very quick, even downloading a movie can be done in less then 10 minutes. sure it'd be great if it was 10 seconds but the difference is not that much that i'm that bothered. where i'd really like to see an increase is mobile reception and internet speed.

Really? Where? I thought the trials were for BT and it went up to about 160mbit?

I am friend with Dandle on the forum here, and at the moment he's hitting speeds of nearly 300mbps with the BT FTTP in the trial area of Ashford, Middx.

It's typical of this forum that we base how bad broadband is in the whole of the UK based on one trial in a small area of the USA. :D

we really are so far behind :(

We are. Still, what use is 700Mb/sec really, at present?

If everyone had a guaranteed 50-100Mb/sec there wouldn't be many issues at all with streaming HD content, gaming, and doing whatever else on the same connection. I still maintain that the main problem, certainly in this country, is the lack of guaranteed bandwidth, not headline speeds.

I agree, 700MB/sec would be nice, but a solid 100Mb/sec would be more than ample.

I don't really understand the need for these uber fast speeds. Sure, we should make sure that the country has a decent network but there is no reason that everywhere needs to have 100Mbps connections. I'm personally content 20Mb connection and can't see why you'd need anything much faster. Certainly there is no need for 600Mb! Just what do people need it for?!

I dont even manage average, I am 1.6mb at best. No plans to update my exchange so looks like I am having to make do. My kids 5 and 7 already are asking me If I am downloading something as the nets slow. God knows what it will be like when 4 people want to share the bandwith.
