'scuse a link to the Sun, although I suppose it's a tad better than DM?

I'm sure you've heard of this story either on the Radio/TV, a lady living in Ireland was desperately ill, and the hospital refused to abort her unborn child in an effort to save her life.

The end result was that both the mother and child died. This kind of thing really, really annoys me. This is taking the Pro-Life stance to the extreme. When it's previously been debated (usually around US election time), I don't remember where anyone mentioned they would refuse to abort if the mother's life was in danger. In fact, I'm pretty sure this is one of the exceptions that Pro-Life campaigners would allow an abortion.

I hope the grieving family get their justice. RIP.

I wonder what the other side to the story is, it might be as straightforward as you're making out, or there could've been other reasons that they didn't.

Yeah, just been watching this on the TV, some nut job "expert" telling us that aborting a baby is never the correct course of action. Even when someones life is in danger =\ thicko

Religion should never ever effect real life decision.

Before condemning the Irish laws on abortion it would probably be a good idea to know if an abortion would have saved her life.

Science > Sky Fairies.

Be wary of promoting science as whiter than white. Atrocities have been committed in the name of science too.

I quite like the idea of Sky Faeries though. What religion has them? :D

More than likely. The baby dying inside her is what lead to the septicaemia.

Whilst an abortion my not have saved this woman's life it is very possible an abortion could save another woman's live in similar circumstances. So yes the law should be condemned. (If the outcome of no abortion would end up with the death of both mother and child)

Irrelevant, it's time Ireland (north and south) dragged itself into the 21st century.

It is relevant to this discussion. If we were having a general discussion on abortion I would agree with you but it does seem that some are trying to use this tragic event to further their cause without knowing or caring about the facts.

I'm all for the sacrifice of who ever has the least chance of survival if no intervention equals the death of both.

As much of a Christian I am, that is disgusting it's her body and her choice? So shocking they denied the treatment as it was her right to go forth with it.

Medical Intervention Abortions are not illegal in the Republic of Ireland, this is more to do with the Hospitals negligence and the Government's inaction in changing the legislation than whatever a religion has to say.......also it needs to be pointed out that the Irish people have voted to keep their abortion laws on more than one occassion and they also support legal abortion in the case where a woman's life is in danger.

In any case this is a tragedy that could have been avoided and let's hope the people who made the decisions that led to this woman's death are held to account, and hopefully this will galvanise the Irish Government to sort out the legislation so it better reflects the Irish Constitution.
