Winter 2012/13

DIN 14 FTW!

I have grown a massive disliking to DP though and your quiver of skis. That's sold it then, I'm getting some Bacons. This gets expensive as the Mrs wants some Line Pandoras as well. Christ.

As of tomorrow (touchwood) this is ours, if you fancy booking a trip: www.abondanceapartment.com *shameless non plug*

Oh, and I've just seen these: http://fr.oakley.com/products/7094/27028

I want! Although that's the price of a set of skis, so sod that right now!

Owning your own boots is a must.

Regarding skis; I improved enormously when i bought my own skis. I got top of the range skis that won all the reviews and they are superb to this day. I learned to carve on them, i got more confidence because they were really short and aggressive so on the steep stuff i could turn on a six pence.

I bought them in 2004/5 and i still use them today. I love knowing that they are totally trustworthy and anytjing going wrong is at my end not the ski's. When i rented skis i couldnt get that assurance.

The downsides of owning skis are the damage factor. The first year i used them they were gouged by a rock on the piste, it was so so so upsetting. You dont get that with rentals.

Totally one of my best every purchaces: all hail volkl supersport 6*s!

You won't regret it. Get some Jester Pros to go on it abnd you pretty much have my dream set up.

That's the ticket. But with 19% off, as I'm getting them sent to work, which is in Switzerland :D

I would echo the you need some new boots comment though. 10years is too long for boots, the plastic will flex and become loose and to the point of they will feel lovely and nice, but your control on the ski drops. Even go to a rental place that does sales too and say you're thinking of new boots but you want to try X and they should let you take out a new set. I've done this (as have my family) a lot as it gives you a chance to try out non rental boots. I bet you notice the much more control between foot > boot > ski.

Also the same with second hand skis. My Salomon Crossmax 8s I had for years, and they look fine and in good condition, but the edges are totally shot. Past the point it's worth anything doing with them as the edges are so rounded. Got the value out of them though!
End of line, end of season, last seasons colours stuff though, there are a lot of bargains to be had there.

This thread has got me so excited. I have resisting the urge to buy skis for so long. I have some new boots for this year (my 18 yr old boots had me in agony last season).

I have been looking at some volkl mantras but that Line Bacon ski looks awesome. I wonder if it is stiff enough for me...

I got the new boots after last season's horror fest and havent been out in them yet, is there anything i can do to ensure i am not in agony again this season: the boots were custom fitted by edge and wax.

Were they fitted in the UK or while away? I'm assuming here. Were they a tight fit, or plenty roomy?

I'd get them on while at home, walk them in a bit. Might be able to sense if you have any points which start to rub at all before you're out there and your feet have inevitably swollen slightly.

If I'd had a pair of boots that were 10 years old I'd definitely be buying a new pair, regardless of how comfortable they are. Get a custom footbed as well, as there's no reason people shouldn't be buying one with the boots these days.

Why? I have custom footbed and they are still like new apart from some scratches on the outside

My dad has had his Nordica boots since his early 30s. So 25 years, they still work for him every year

Rent for only once a year.

I'm looking to buy some boots for this season, but I'm guessing that I've left it too late and will need to wait until after season for a good deal.

Any recommendations? Can get to Decathlon in France, or happy to look in the UK.

Fitted in the uk and pretty roomy. I will give them a walkaround for a couple of hours to see how they do.

Cant wait to get out there now

Try the snow and rock outlet site

I have Salomon Performa CF 7, with custom moulds. I think they are CF7s

Think i'll stick to hiring ski's for the time being until I decide to go more than once a year. Not really worth the time, effort, maintenance etc for just 6 days a year

These goggles have been very good for me - http://www.shadestation.co.uk/Oakle...ml?aff=aff10&gclid=CKydqPqA0bMCFaTMtAodRGEAKw

Buff headhear are very good, i have one similar to this but a pattern thats a bit less dull! http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=bu...0&ndsp=48&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0,i:86&tx=44&ty=67

Yeah the Bacon's are great. Only problem is they are pretty soft (Eric Pollard seems to love really soft & wide powder/all powder skis - not a bad thing (I do to)) so probably not stiff enough for you. Something similar in the Line range would be one of the Prophet/Influence series. More directional but they are otherwise similar and slightly stiffer.

I love my Salomon 2012s. They'll ski all over the mountain from groomers, crud, off piste etc. They just don't have the float for really deep powder, which I would like.

The only reason I want something fatter underfoot and with a little more flex is why I want the Bacon's.

Incidentally, can anyone recommend some goggles? Mine have a crack, and whilst I'd be tempted to buy them again I wouldn't mind a change :).
