DirectX 11.1 exclusive to Windows 8, Microsoft confirms

As for stability, how many of us go for months without seeing a bluescreen where with XP it was a weekly if not daily occurrence.

If people were/are getting bluesceens in XP on a daily or even weekly basis then either there was some underlying issue, it had been installed for years or they were using it it in a much more extreme manner than the vast majority of people would.

Not going to be getting it until / if they put back the start menu.

I tried it and absolutely hate the new layout.

+1

I went from 95 to 98 to XP and it was fairly well polished from the off. BSODS I never got or if I did, it was where I was doing something wrong (overclocking/conflictions).

Pay stardock $5 for Start8 you tight git and it brings back the start menu.:p

I put W8 in the bedroom totally silent PC:D, it's only really used for media playback.

Anyway, I put in the Start8, as instantly, it's horrible without the start button.

However, when the penny dropped and I picked up my mce remote, I realised it controls metro and I can just use the remote, I don't need the mouse any more.:D

Hopefully I'm going to get my other £15 W8 dual booted with my current W7 installed into my main rig and see what's what soon.

I will be paying $5 for Start8, as I'm not going to get on with metro using my monitor, unless I'm watching media through the wall on my TV.

I'll get to find out how the twin task bar gets on using dual screens too along with some gaming.

^^ Tesselation look great on DX11 capable cards :)
I may just be missing something, but I can honestly say I have never noticed tesselation in action, and when there was that fuss about Crysis2 using it on strange objects I looked at the screenies and wondered what the fuss was about.

I may just be awkward. :-)

I'm not going to get into this Win8 love/hate thing, but as far as DX11.1 is concerned, the only tangible benefit to us is that future games will have native 3D support. I don't particularly care about that, so I don't see what all the fuss is about.

So will Dx11.1 be the next selling point for AMD and Nvidia and will it be included in the next gen gpus? Or will it be ignored a bit like Dx10.1 was.

Not sure, but i did say in another thread quite rashly that i would upgrade for Dx11.1, but once my brain kicked in, i thought i'd wait for comparison screenshots or something to see if it is indeed worthwhile, but games these days still use Dx9 mainly and sometimes Dx10 more over Dx11 i would say, so i'm going to wait and see.

Thing is while Windows 7 and Vista aren't that far apart - some fairly subtle tweaking went on that changed things that took 2-3 steps on vista back to 1-2 steps on Windows 7 (same as on XP) on an almost sub-conscious level Vista was more annoying to use than XP or Win7. Added to that they fixed the HDD thrashing, UAC intrusion and general bloat, etc. making it feel better to use. (Some of this was fixed with later patches, etc. for Vista).

Thing is Windows 7 does everything I want how I want it, its one of the most stable OSes I've used and has no significant performance issues any more I have no reason to move to Windows 8 which thanks to the metro UI has gone back in many ways to adding an extra step to do every day tasks (depending on your approach to desktop useage).

My final Windows XP install before moving to Windows 7 had been going for 3 years without being reinstalled and the only time it ever BSOD'd in all that time was once when the GPU failed (total hardware failure).

i will wait for DX12 and windows 9.1.1 that will be the only major upgrade, .1 is more like crumbs to a starving Ethiopian.

I went over to W8, had umpteen problems particularly with streaming video over my network, so returned to W7 for the time being. dX11.1 notwithstanding.

I can see whats comming next, if microsoft now decide to bundle the start menu button with Win8, the EU will sue them for not offering a choice of competitors start menu buttons.:D

DX10.1 was ignored because nVidia couldn't do it really. Anyone remember Assassin's Creed and the performance boost that came with it for people with 10.1 cards?

What amazes me is for the complexity of the OS , why not offer a user selectable gui ? Everyone is happy then .

Tested win8 months back for a couple of days ,reminded me of something designed for children, nothing wrong with live tiles etc but again let us customise everything , I do find it worrying when an experienced user can't find the off button !

Apparently most of the new DX11 features are 3D related,so will not interest most. Anyway let's hope Valve gets its Unix OS going and we can all game on that :D

I've been using Windows 8 for a while now and it's just like Windows 7 most of the time. Even Office 2013 drops back into the desktop.

I've just switched to Windows Phone as well and the Windows 8 interface FKA Metro makes a lot more sense when you've used Windows Phone.
