But according to the insurance company thats cheap lol im 33 aswell,
i think the best plan to do was told of a friend aswell is to stay on my parents fully comp insuruance for the first 2 years to build up some experiance,

then it should be cheaper after that.. as all im paying at the minute is £2 extra on there insurance per month lol

only this is i would get no claims bonus`s or anything, would i get anything after 2 years ? even being on there insurance ?

No, it's also fraudulent if you're the main user of the car. Get your own policy and start building up experience and no claims.

Its worth pointing out that having your parents insure the car is known as fronting as is illegal.

As a new driver that quote isnt out of the ordinary. I would have thought you are doing something wrong on a quote or where you live is a high risk area?

first thing i would do is get go to admiral, they are quite reasonable for new drivers. put all your details in and then add both parents as named drivers on that policy, adding them should bring the quote down.

You're a new driver, deal with it. The insurance company doesn't care if you are 17 or 70, you are still a risk. Can't afford to insure yourself properly there's always:

I kind of miss explained ;)
currently i am insured but as a name on my parents licence. IE: im not the main driver :)

i was just wondering if it would reduce the costs if i stayed as i am for the first 2-3 years.
surely that would reduce the insurance cost when i change to main driver ect.

Read what I posted. If you are insured as a named driver on a car which you use regularly, you are committing insurance fraud.

Not quite, a named driver could quite legally use the car regularly. The point is that the policy holder should be the main driver.

Not to argue with what you are saying, but for awhile after I passed my test, I was insured on my own car(V5 registered owner was a parent), as such they had to be on the insurance policy, to save some hassle, the parent on the V5 then was the policy holder, but I was listed as a named driver, with the ticked option to say I was the main driver. At the time, I was insured through Elephant, but I was neither the car owner, nor policy holder, but was marked as the main driver. Got pulled over once, the copper couldn't have cared less, he was happy that I was insured to drive it V5 owner or not, main driver or not.

I was still insured.

As far as the insurance premium went, on the 2 quotes received with me as main driver and without, the value didn't change.

That's fair enough if the insurance company knows you're the main driver. What my post was referring to was someone being a named driver on a car which they use most of the time, while the policy holder does not. This means the insurance company isn't aware of the risks they are insuring against, and cannot charge accordingly :)

Elephant is part of the admiral etc and they have an anti fronting policy which is why adding people as named drivers drives the price down, this would be why the quotes remain the same. Plus they gave you the option to be insured as the main driver rather than the policy holder so this is not breaking the law.

When i first insured with them i use to be able to pay £50 extra and drive any vehicle third party which was handy.

I've taken out a policy with Admiral a few months ago and it states I can drive any other car with the owners consent and ill be covered on my policy for third party only.
This seems a bit of a grey area as a copper wont accept you as being covered if pulled over in said car so im told, Or is that incorrect?

In 99% of cases the other car needs to also have a valid insurance policy in someone elses name, for your policy to be valid to drive it 3rd party.

I think what it is, in the past if you had a fully comp policy you could drive another fully comp insured car. unless your policy specifically states this you will not be covered. So a lot of people get caught out thinking they are covered when their policy doesn’t cover them. By the sounds of it you are allowed to do so, I think this is a standard option over 25, I was just fortunate to be able to add it at 17 for a small fee. Also the other car has to be insured by the owner too which people get mixed up on.

The biggest issue with getting any NCD with your current situation is that the policy is in your parents' names with you as a named driver. More recently, insurance companies have accepted the NCD you have accrued as a named driver, however in the past, it was the case that you had to have a policy in your name to earn the NCD.

Depends entirely on the insurance company, however with regards to the OP, £1400 does seem a bit steep unless you live in Bradford, Belfast or Inner London.

can't believe most people are hung up on his current insurance status and nobodies suggested a price comparison website yet...

have you tried adding your parents/relative with a lot of experience to your quote? This can often bring premiums tumbling ( it did for me anyway)
