how much better is the 7970 over the 670?

I have the coolermaster cosmos-s, my system is 4 yr old and build quality is excellent. I do not, however, believe that it is any superior in quality to other cases at a cheaper price point. I wouldn't now say that the cosmos is a great looker, at the time i found it aesthetically pleasing but would now rather have something as minimalist and unobtrusive as possible. Can't say i would pay £100 for that luxury, as nice as the silverstone looks. I would rather spend the saved money on the hardware or the screen which is what i look at when i use my pc.

@weehamish,
If your'e planning on using a Silverstone that vents out the top, you really should be looking at an exhausting gpu like a reference one or the IceQ 7950-Silverstone highly recommends this for cooling.

used the crucial M4 since july 2011, 3 firmware updates later no issue with it.
all flashes worked in the machine and no lost data.
ssd is such a product you need to stay updated with it as even intel had issues with theirs.
not to say the customer should need to do that however.
also, half the price for it now a year later. sigh ;)

7950 is a excellent card.

I can live with firmware flashing, and agree that the flashing is painless on the M4- the Force 3 was destructive and was advised not to clone and start afresh from yellowbeard(Corsair's SSD guru) but it was a poor show from Crucial not letting their customers know about the bug.

I vented my frustration in the M4 thread in here to get the odd reply of 'it's your own fault- it was posted on tpu 2 months ago', but although I'm at tpu almost every day for gossip, I missed that solitary piece of news.

It's also not my job to find out about it, luckily I can sort things myself(at the cost of the missus and the wean nipping in my ears as I was off on holiday for a few days), but if I had to take my rig into the purple shirt place or a local PC store, I dread to think the cost I would have been billed, probably resulting in said stores binning my 'working' SSD and paying for another on top plus the cost of labour.

I also had to rectify builds that I done and fix the problem at a cost to myself as I was no doubt going to get a bad name as it would have been my fault because I specced and built them.

Apart from that, the M4 is a cracking SSD(unless you flash it with the latest bios-although they only recommend the latest bios if you have problems) but I took my cash elsewhere as Crucial and Corsair let me down.

If I'm let down, another company will get my cash.

I was using it as a games drive until last week when I put W8 on it, I totally forgot about the freezing/disappearing until I 'clicked' on why the the W8 kept freezing, it came out last night and sold it on to a friend for very little cash(yes, he knows about the OS problem and is going to use it for games).

Force 3 disappearing problem(OcUK had a huge thread in here last year about it also):

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=O...627b57ea6b812a&bpcl=38897761&biw=1280&bih=671

I didn't have a clue about that...Seems SSD's are not as solid as first thought (no pun intended).

I did a google search for Crucial M4 and seems this has the same problems.

I think you could do the same search for any of the popular brands and find the same errors. It is still relatively new ground, so I would imagine seeing early problems. I would hope they have most of them sorted now.

Going back to cases, The Silverstone looks 'sweet as' when it is water cooled. That is the only time imo it does look good though.

It wasn't as widespread greg, I had a look earlier on the Corsair forum and surprise surprise, the threads in question and others have been deleted that I posted on for advice at the time, they were 30 pages+ when it happened, almost at launch customers were going mental.

I couldn't even flash the firmware on my rig because of the intel controllers:eek:, luckily I took it into work and flashed it on an AMD rig first time, Corsairs answer to that was post it to us in Holland(iirc) and we will do it and send it back but there was about a 14 day turnaround and your data was gone regardless how you flashed it.

Just posting my thoughts, I'm not comparing them although the M4 is generally slightly/good bit faster depending on what your doing with it.

If the Sammy gives me grief, then they won't get any more cash from me either, time will tell, although it's hands down faster than the other two.

It is early days, but in this day and age if these multi billion companies want to keep getting cash from punters, they will have to do a lot better or else they'll end up in severe trouble like OCZ.:(

:)

Changed the SSD to an Intel one lol!

Im dropping the 7970 for a 7950 also, i hope i dont lose too much performance.

Now for the case. I dont wanna swap the card for a noisy exhaust fan they do my head in!

God whys it so complicated to build a pc :\

Fair points Tommy but a SSD is one of the most uninteresting things ever but does a grand job :) It would be good if they were affordable for a 1TB or 500GB variant but still way too expensive for my liking. I only use mine as a boot drive now and a couple of games. Even then it is almost full....120GB doesn't go far :(

That's why I got 2 120GB for RAID. :p

OK so new build is this!

Silverstone Fortress FT02 Case, i dunno what this GPU problem is with this case? how will the ASUS card peform bad here? The case should suck out all the hot air.

Core i5 3570K overclocked

Asus P8Z77-V Motherboard

16GB Corsair 1600MHz Memory (2 x 8GB) maybe drop to 8GB save cash

Asus 7970 Direct CU II Video Card drop maybe drop this to a 7950 and save some more cash? this will be my biggest save.

Intel 330 Series 240GB SSD (this is better than the Corsair)

2000GB SATA III HDD the difference between 1 and 2TB is very little so maybe keep the 2TB?

LG Blu Ray Writer

Corsair CX750W PSU

Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler

Anyways Rusty link me some nice cases £100+ mark pref nothing above £150.

Link some of the ones you personally knows good also.

Ill order tomoz so need nail all these problems creeping up, already nailed the SSD problem, i hope this one is just as quick!.

Weehamish, you don't seem to be really listening to people properly. You've been told loads of times that a 7950 will be the best choice for you, you will not notice a difference in performance between them.

You are dragging out building your computer and making it something that it ought not to be. It's a realtively simple process considering your budget. I'm not trying to be mean or harsh but you're asking loads of questions but doing very little listening.

Get yourself a 7950, you won't actually experience the performance difference a 7970 may offer.

Stick to 16GB of RAM, this isn't really where the savings are made since the price differences between quantities of RAM is very very low.

Do you need a bluray writer? Do you intend to burn blurays? I'm guessing not really, you'd save a decent chunk just getting a bluray reader.

Do you need a 240GB SSD if you're buying a 2TB hard disk? If not, get a 120GB SSD for Windows and your main programs, and use the 2TB for storage.

Games wise (which will more than likely be the bulk of your storage) don't always really benefit from an SSD anyway.

I've given up on you mate :D.

You need an exhaust out the back card like an IceQ for that case anyway and as spoffle says you're massively over complicating things while not really listening to anyone either.

You didn't address my point on build quality of this case over others.

I have never done a raid setup...Is it easy? and can I add Raid without having to format my original drive?

I haven't done it yet, I've ran out of SATA headers  it's not hard to set up though, you will have to format however.

I'll be doing it when I get my new board and CPU, (looking at an ASRock Extreme 9 with its silly 12 SATA ports :p)

Only thing now is that I'm still a bit concerned about the X79 crossfire/eyefinity issue, I can't seem to find a definitive answer on it. Some people seem to have the issue, some people don't.

If I decide on a fresh install (maybe Windows 8), I will buy another 120 and Raid it then. I am very lazy and cba doing a new install with all the updates.

I would be concerned about the X79/X58 issues also. It seems that some work and some don't and AMD are aware of the problem but so far no fix.

Check out the Kingston HyperX Beast 8GB 2400C11 kit's that just got released in November, they are really cheap - under £40, OcUK need to stock them, I splashed out on 2x8GB kit, plus UK RMA base.

Forget Corsair, it's all name and expense...! Kingston biggest RAM/Memory producer in the world - fact, loads cheaper for same performance.

SSD's, go for Crucial, or Kingston - they have UK RMA warranty, also Intel is good, they will pick it up by courier if it fails.

As for graphics cards, if money is tight get the 7950 best for price/performance ratio, otherwise if you got £200+ spare income a week, buy any card you want, it won't make any difference in the grand scheme of things will it lol.

I went with a HAF X case, it's a good case - great cooling, better than Corsair fashion victim cases anyway lol.

There are a few threads about it,its affecting X58/79 mobo's.

I tried it on a RIVE with crossfired Matrix Platinums,
it was ok for a couple of days then it went pear shaped.

AMD know about the issue and are trying to sort it.

In my experience most people have an innate preference for either AMD or NVidia. The 7970 and 670/680 are all so close in terms of performance (i.e. they all have enough grunt to run the latest games with all the eye candy on at high resolutions) that it's usually more your preference for one particular brand that's the decider :) It takes a major price/performance advantage to make most people switch brands.

This is the case with me. I happily wait for AMD driver fixes because i like the brand. Only had one nvidia gfx card and that was the 8800 and we all know why I didnt have a ATI those 2 generations :p
