I had a sad moment the other day when I thought I'd look in on the maker's website of the game that started PC gaming off for me.

The game was Black Hawk Down by Novalogic, and it was the best time of my gaming life. The game was brilliant for the era it was in, that's probably why it was a best seller.

Anyway, they (Nova) released Joint OPs and the BHD player-base dutifully moved over to the new engine with drivable and flyable vehicles.

Then came BF2 which grabbed my attention and that was it, I'd moved from Novalogic to EA in a blink of an eye.

Rarely checking back in on Nova's games, time flew by to 2012, and that's when I decided to check in on them. What I found was very sad, very very sad. Novalogic is now a poor excuse of a website, with a community (forums) consisting of just a handful of people.

How can a company that produced such a gem as BHD almost die to the sad state it's in now? Why didn't they put out titles to challenge EA and the other FPS makers? How has this happened?

So onto you, what was your first FPS MP and did it die with time?

Sad to say it and at risk of sounding harsh mate, but because of people like you leaving to play other games.

Really is a case of "Ooo, shiny".

Ultima Online for me, nothing has ever come close and probably never will :(. I think it's still going too, but the servers are dead quiet now.

EDIT: You meant FPS's, so I will say CS..but that isn't dead so...arghh I messed my post up :(

CoD4 was my first ever FPS online, probably still going although got a bit hacker-happy the last time I played.

100%, this. On both accounts, I think Alan is actually me :p The closest I have came to replicating the "feel" i got from the original CS, was MW2. But all FPS's now don't even come close to these games for me.

Big Red Racing on the Wireplay dial-up network. That would have been in the late 90's - so I imagine they both died a death a long time ago :D

My first real foray into on-line gaming, excluding the very early MUDs, was RTCW which was closely followed by MoH:AA and the original CoD. Back in the day they were quite simply the best thing since sliced bread. It pains me to see what the latter two have morphed into over time.

I said FPS, but I should've omitted that. I mean...your first online multiplayer, I suppose.

I had a short period of playing CS, but I just kept getting my arse kicked. I prefer bigger, slower maps.

I would love one more evening on the old Predators server playing BHD. :(

Can't remember my first, but one that saddened me recently is Far Cry. I truly expected the MP to still be going, but it is completely dead and doesn't even work for me anymore. Apparently, there are still about 20 people who play it online through some sort of patch though.

Met so many awesome people on there and had some great times. :(

Call of Duty 2. Put about 1800 hours into online play when I was 12 - 14. Best fps to date imo but it's my fave online game ever hehe.

Soldier of Fortune.

Best FPS ever, I remember asking some dude how he forward rolls when running along and he was like 'you just press crouch button mate' lol.

Was on 56k then and my mate got broadband before me so I used to go round his to download maps for the game.

Anyone know if people still play it online? would love to go back to it tbh, nothing beats shooting someone in the leg and watching it fly off & disappear
