I'm having a meltdown please help!

A cloud storage solution should never ever be you final backup! Or even a way to transfer files. Good old external hard drive at home and a USB pen to travel is always the way to go.

And why not? On both counts?

If you have good local backups then adding on a reliable cloud backup makes sense.

As for sharing files. I can't remember the last time I used USB. Dropbox is the way to go.

Unless you are on of those privacy freaks. :)

I think the OP has grasped he should have made a back up, however, can anyone actually help in the file recovery like he initially asked for? ie if he emails it to someone, or someone suggests a prog that may help?

Oooh, listen to you all up in your ivory tower! ;):p

Ever since 2003 when I lost some important files I've backed-up religiously with an external HDD. Every so often I'll also do a back-up onto DVD-RW/RAM cycling through about 10-13 discs.

It only really sinks in when you learn the hard way. :o

Wow, you're a pro, you backed up your post by double posting.

OP, take note!

I have everything on Dropbox. (Assignment wise)

Obviously have a file on my hardrive as well due to dropbox's mechanism.

I then back it up on occasion to an additional hard drive.

You need a proper revision control system as well.
I use git with dropbox, after doing work at uni I just push to git. Then pull on one of my devices which has dropbox.
Simple and it has proper version control.

when i did my phd thesis i had about 10 copies - hard drives, floppy disks, zip disks, everything i could think of!!
of course pen dives didn't really exist at the time.

Mine is only on drop box... Kinda feel bad now :/ haha... best make a copy :p

Edit: Just made three backups... Just a pain in the bum as now when I update something I need to update everything :(

On this note, what's a good method for keeping your usb pen in sync with folders, automatically, while not having a hissy fit on uni workstations...

After mocking the op i had a similar issue

I default save to dropbox and then copy to hard drive rather than other way around.
Luckily dropbox has that previous versions feature

I was writing a new report from a previous report but forgot to change the title..save rather than save as.

Very good feature that previous version!

Even with a backup you can get caught out as I discovered years ago with acronis true image, brilliant at drive images so I put my trust in it for backups and then discovered it had fowled up my email backup which was pop3 email in outlook back then. Ideally one would check the backup by restoring it somewhere else and seeing if you could open the restored files but space was a premium then as is time.
