I think a thread listing the above would be handy for people that may invest in an external Hard Disk for their Wii U.

I'll start off with my drive:

Incompatible:

Western Digital 1TB Passport External Drive

It would be nice of you guys if you could chip in with your problems with drives, or non problems as the case might be :)

Not sure on the model number , since its so old, but my 8 year old 320gb Seagate works fine, from browsing around various forums it seems old drives are more likely to work then newer ones.

My newer Samsung 500GB USB 3 ( the one sold here ) doesn't work

Yeah you definitely need an external power source drive to get this working!

Yes, makes sense.

If there's any guys out there sitting on the fence as to what drive to get, get one that comes with its own power supply, you may get problems USB 3 too but I'm not 100% convinced on that front.

My recommendation is a self powered USB 2.0 external HardDisk, should be able to get one for about £50 on eBay or even Amazon. Overclockers *might* sell them too.

Thanks guys for some very useful feedback, that could save a lot of headaches for people that didn't know this information.

I know they say not to (Nintendo) But i've used a micro SD card in a usb reader, and it worked fine and allows the transfer of games. Just a cheeky option if you're stuck.

I think that makes a lot of sense actually and it would work the same way as it does on PCs.

Most small 2.5" hard drives can run off the USB power, but anything bigger and especially regular sized desktop drives will have to require it's own power source.

An oversight by Nintendo perhaps? I'm sure they should mention it so it doesn't confuse people.
