Duchess of Cambridge's nurse has reportedly been found dead

I appreciate that when I drive, if somebody walks directly in front of me I may not be able to stop in time.

This does not mean that I intend to hit them.

The radio station may have appreciated that they could cause some offence - as, indeed, an awful lot of comedians do. This does not mean that they intend somebody to kill themselves.

If you are doing 50mph in a 30mph area then you intend to cause harm. These prankers knew what they were doing and what the consequences could be so they don't have an excuse. They deceived working staff intentionally by pretending to be somebody else in a position of authority (pretending to be a member of the Royal family).

Would she not have noticed the Accents of said Aussies?

This is so odd, I am simply confused, there are literally dozens of variables (serious variables of course).

I cant speculate beyond my original rhetorical question honestly, I could spout any number of reasons why she would off herself due to current circumstances, but no evidence means its pointless.

Lets hope for more enlightenment (as well as untainted version, doubt that will occur but...hope?)

Few points.

I believe she was not giving away private information, she just taken the call and then passed it on, didn't she?

Furthermore, can the Aussie radio hosts be done for identity thief?

Lastly, I think it's far more likely that she was already depressed / suicidal and this is just a coincidence / or last straw.

Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) and 2Day FM are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha from King Edward VII’s Hospital and we extend our deepest sympathies to her family and all that have been affected by this situation around the world.

Chief Executive Officer Rhys Holleran has spoken with the presenters, they are both deeply shocked and at this time we have agreed that they not comment about the circumstances. SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy.

Not if English wasn't her first language - if you learned to speak another language at a conversational level you're not necessarily always going to distinguish different accents let alone pick up on it when someone impersonates a different accent.

Theophany, are you taking the statement that the hospital were supporting her at face value? Obviously they are going to say that.

Ahh, the Mandy Rice-Davies defence. As always, it falls dead in the water when confronted with a request for evidence to the contrary.

All I'm saying is that at this point, there is no reasonable burden of evidence to suggest that the hospital were going to hang her out to dry. Balance of probability is a speculator's game.

No, nor would I. You are not on guard for something like that.

If someone called who sounded like the Queen you'd just go into a half panic and put it straight through. You wouldn't think "hangg onnnnn... this is a prank!".

That theory works, up until you hear the recording and realise it sounds nothing like the Queen.

I have no idea what the Queen sounds like, if I'm entirely honest. I've heard her once at year at Xmas and then I hardly pay attention. I imagine the same is true for a lot of people.

English, not first language....

If you learned to speak say Arabic at a conversational level I don't think you could you instantly tell that the 'Iraqi prime minister' was actually some Moroccan radio DJ putting on an Iraqi/Gulf accent. Despite it being obvious to an Iraqi perhaps....

This is brilliant. We are assuming that her English is at a conversational level because of her name. Oh Lordy.

Eh? He's making a good point that even if you learned advanced Arabic the chance of your being able to tell someone Iraqi from a half decent impression of that person over the phone is slim.

Or maybe you're saying that her English isn't at a conversation level and she's a nurse? Actually, I don't understand what you're saying.

Alas these things happen. It could have easily have played out with no serious repercussions. You can't plan for these things. Tragic situation, but that's life.

Strange, I think that she speaks with a pretty solid British accent.

Who, the nurse? She sounds as Indian as a lamb bhuna.

Love the bit before the call when they say, "we're not planning to cause any trouble here".

Sure, just one death. My dislike for Australians is intensified further. If that were even possible.

I think you're confusing the two nurses - it is the nurse who initially answered and then transferred the call who committed suicide. She's clearly not got a 'British' accent.

Yeah I think he's talking at cross purposes. It's the person who first answers the phone and transfers the call who died.
