Something that's struck me lately whilst out and about is that when people ask me where I work/what I do, I feel like my explanation is almost an apology. :D I'm in the financial sector, so sometimes get disapproving looks and a critical turn in the conversation (as if us IT bods get mahoosive bonuses!).

I wonder how people like Estate Agents, Politicians, Traders, Lawyers, Traffic Wardens etc deal with this when they know that their professsions are pretty much reviled by a large proportion of the general public?

Does anyone bend the truth about what they do to avoid hassle? I once told a group of people I worked on the Jaffa Cake production line for the lulz. :)

Free Jaffa Cakes all round!

Seriously though, they aren't all bad people. I know some letting agents that are absolutely fantastic - some of the best service I have ever had - and LAs are generally reviled as being even lower than estate agents. Then again I know a rather rich banker who is everything you would stereotype him as. He actually loves money more than anything else. I think the bad ones just don't give a damn about anyone else, really.

Especially the ones that are raking it in.

I used to work in a scaffolding company just as a yard lad. Although always aspired to be in the IT sector. Kinda ashamed to say i was a yard lad because all the mates had very good jobs.

Finally got my foot in the door, at the bottom and took a pay cut to be here. But i am very happy and kind of proud to say i have a career at the end of it.

/grouphugs welcome :)

I'm very proud of what I do, even though I get a lot of stick for it, because it's something that I've worked hard for years to achieve :)

I tend to always think I could be doing better but if I am objective about it then I suppose I am happyish with what I have achieved so far. My current business was born right at the beginning of the downturn and has survived, so that is good.

If you're a Banker, Politician or Estate Agent you could always avoid the embarrassment of saying what you do for a living by telling people you're a Fluffer instead.

I'm quite proud of my job, a lot of people mistake this for pride in who I work for (Eddie Stobart) which erks me somewhat, the name on the truck does not matter to me as much as the pay packet that I do it for does! - I do what could be described as an essential job, if all the trucks out there stopped, the country would be in a fix worryingly quickly....

But I happily say to people I'm a trucker, usually avoid saying who I drive for (mainly down to that damn Channel 5 show!!) but yeah, no issue with my identity employment wise. :)

I'm an Air Traffic Controller and very proud of my job. It always gets a "wow" when I tell people what I do. Usually followed by "isn't that really stressful?"

No; I like to think of myself as environmentally conscious, but I work for an oil company who was responsible for the the worst oil spill in history.

I'm proud of the effort I put in at work and the integrity that I always try to maintain. I'd feel the same way whatever job I did.

A friend of mine got through a few stages of the recruitment process but failed on one of the tests. Something to do with 3-dimensional thinking/cubes... ATC is a job I reckon I'd enjoy, must be amazing, not sure I have the right mindset though, my thought processes are somewhat abstract at times!

I dunno about being proud exactly, but I enjoy what I do and I'm not ashamed of it. A lot of People generally don't understand what I do so I end up explaining it all the time, which can be tedious at times.

I sell print advertising. I spin it like I'm that bloke from Mad Men, but really I'm just a call-centre worker with a reasonable wage :(
