Nan just got burgled - Help me track the laptop

And if it was the same scrote who nicked it, don't you think that even if you were stronger than them, that its still a bad cause of action. Aside from the fact that you may be arrested, as I already pointed out, you also face the fact that they know where your Nan lives and might make her life a living hell as revenge.

Yes I have thought this.. I only Jest with the above.

Should the scum be stupid enough to power the laptop up, and should I have enough time to get on it and get the info, and should the Police not do anything with it...

Then yes, I would investigate myself. Yes, I would attempt to track it down to an exact address through what ever means necessary.

At this point, I would likely call the police at the time when I know they are in, and If I knew the laptop was in there.

If even then they did nothing about it... Then, I would probably just go do it myself.

Even if you don't manage to get the laptop back, assuming they're stupid enough to keep using it as is, you could install a keylogger, and steal their passwords for everything. Give yourself a nice £600 new laptop fund from their internet banking, before horribly fraping them...

interested to see how this turns out.

My in-laws were burgled recently, not a nice experience for anyone. best of luck.

No news yet then?

Nope hasn't come online as of yet.

To be honest I think its a slim chance that it will.

Going from the type of burglary it was, they were just after hard cash. So I would expect this laptop to probably sit around there house for a few days before being sold onto someone who at that point, will hopefully want to test it before purchase and hook it up to the net.

Just bear in mind that the people who you may be trying to catch have probably bought the laptop quite innocently. Unlikely that the thieves will keep it themselves.

It's unlikely they wont know its stolen when they buy it. Thieves usually want quick sales, I used to know a lot of people with burgled houses and they always sold there stuff to people they knew for a quick sale, some obviously would buy it to sell it on but I'd imagine the people they sold stuff onto werent naive

I believe many will also sell to cash convertor places, which is usually the reason who you see such places in numbers in dodgy areas, because the businesses don't really care that it may be stolen.

Log in, find their routers IP address, report to police (may need to enclose instructions on how they use this to catch them), done.

You will need the external IP address and the time and date window so that the physical address and who owns the connection (assuming they aren't borrowing someone elses wifi) can be got from the ISP. You don't need access to the router to get the external IP but it can be tricky if the ISP uses proxies, etc. (infact if you've established a remote connection you can look up what your connected to from your end i.e. netstat -b in command prompt).

Getting the police to act on that could be harder unless you have additional details unfortunatly.

Frak!!!!!

The laptop came online, for the first time last night!

I was on it instantly as Ive been watching Logmein like a Hawk this past week.

Straight away signed into it, Copied across my program script to install Prey... Whilst thats running Im watching what hes doing on it (without him knowing) and his mouse goes to Start>Control Panel>Add Remove... and he starts scrolling down the list and selects Logmein.

At this point Prey was still copying and Logmein was the only open channel.. I managed to close the process for explorer so he couldn't uninstall it but then he clearly knew what he was doing and fired up tskmgr, restarted explorer and killed a bunch of processes; including Logmein. Prey had just installed and showed up that laptop on my account but it failed to pick up anything as he then killed the laptop (I assume).

So so so close!!

Game Over now.. Its gone.

Awwww bugger. So close! Nice try pal.

This thread has just made me double check my own security with the icloud/find feature. I can lock my laptop remotely and I think it shows the last known location of the device too.
