A new Steam console ?

You can't see teh reason why a living room console needs apps for netflix, Facebook etc and have a media store for films and music? Your in the minority. Even TVs offer these basic things.

Software isn't apps.
And how much of steam games or software run on Linux.
And it's not just creating a wrapper to run on Linux. How about controls many pc games are not set up for console controls.

They have a huge amount of work if they want to compete with the big boys.

Software IS apps (app-lications).

Ugghh your English is so bad.

There's no reason they wouldn't offer these things, Valve know what they're doing and the things that they release often come with a high level of "polish".

Those are pretty basic and I really can't imagine the Valve 'console' *not* supporting them. If they don't then yeah, I agree with you, they'll have shot themselves in the foot.

I really would be shocked if they don't support all the basic streaming stuff, social media stuff and a smattering of productivity apps though. Beyond that they will focus on games I imagine.

Well the W8 Windows store has not changed the way I use my PC at all, so I see no reason why these things are necessary. Heck a decent browser is more then adequate to do all those things and Steam itself has support for software distribution and sales. The 'App' is just a gimmick.

Heck if the Valve console was successful theres no reason why Netflix or Facebook can't release steam 'Apps' through the current Steam system that would work fine on Linux...

Most people do not have a pc in the lounge, we are minorities. And yes it is vital for the mass market.
People don't want to use browsers, they want apps.

As I allready said ms with all their backing and money are getting slated. They sold 40million license to consumers in 3 days and still developers are questioning the profitability. Now what is steam going to shift? Are they going to self fund apps? Going to have open days you can come get help developing apps?

Well it kinda does, Android is basically Linux as it is, it'd take little to no effort for Valve to arrange this sort of software to be available.

 why not read the thread, I mentioned they could use android system if they chose. In fact I said all that in my first post.

Exactly, the only reason they don't support that sort of stuff on the desktop version of Steam is because it doesn't need to be there.

I think people are forgetting or overlooking what exactly this will be, it'll be an operating system, whereas Steam now on PCs is just an application that runs within the operating system, there's little to no reason to include such functionality on a desktop application when it's already available.

Steam already supports the distribution of software directly through the Steam store, Netflix or Facebook could already release an App if they so wanted that would work fine on a Linux distro made by Valve...

How is one the same as the latter.
A service to distribute is. It the other.

I know you did, I'm pointing out that android IS linux so it's irrelevant to bring it up like that, it already exists.

No it doesn't exist android is different to Linux. You can't just run an android app on any Linux version. There are ways/implementations you can do it. But that's not the same.

What because they dont call there software store 'Apps'? lol

They could make an 'App' page inside steam with very little effort, it's just a gimmicky word for a controlled software distribution platform...

Make a new Steam Store page called 'Apps' job done.

What are you on about. At no point did I say they didn't have a way to distribute it. I said they have no apps to distribute, they will not have any marketshare for most producers to make apps for their specific OS, they would need to use androids App Store.
