A new Steam console ?

A lot of peoples arguments on this page, its pretty simple.

Valve are making a home entertainment system using Steam to distribute there games/software.

I can't see why this wouldn't be a massive success. There is not 1 thing in its way stopping it.

Games.

Although, if it did encourage a change to OpenGL, there would be more gamers (Mac and Linux users natively)

And simply if it doesn't have an App Store with apps it will fail. It's as simple as that.

Why does a gaming console need apps? I don't log onto my PS3 and say "oh i'm just going to check facebook", i jump on my phone or PC. You have no valid arguement to back up the need to have a app market on a gaming console.

I don't want or need doubletwist video player on my Steam box, i dont want or need instagram either. Its a gaming console that will digitally distribute games. Shimples.

It's allready in a niche market and is unlikely to have a massive indent on current console suppliers

Pretty sure steams active user base is large enough to warrant a console, otherwise they wouldn't be doing this. Steam is hardly "niche".

they could use android.

Why on earth would they / should they use android a mobile phone/tablet OS for a gaming console OS? Its completely illogical and ridiculous.

There's quite a few things. It will run traditional games, for many of those games controls will be an issue, seeing as your going from keyboard/mouse to living room.
There's also direct x, but they are allready working on Linux client which will run these.
There's also the fact taht its going to be pc games console up against extremely well established consoles. Consoles that in all likelihood, will also get a massive overhaul around the same time this is released. As well as consoles having a bigger market to start with.

They don't need to run android to run android apps/store.
They can use their own Linux OS and do a deal with google to run the store. Best of both worlds an instant app filled store and a games console.

Your telling me a publisher wouldn't look at steam and go "Well there is millions of people running steam, they have a unified hardware system and no physical media distribution needed" it would be stupid to publish on them!?

The profit margins on digital over physical would be a lot larger. I guarantee developers will be making games for a Steam box.

I think you've missed the point.
There's already thousands of games on steam, they have the games, but OpenGL compatibility? Not many, and certainly not many that launch these days.

Lots of games do not natively run on Linux, steam are allready working on a Linux client that will/should run all games.

You've misunderstood.
How are Valve going to get a Linux Distro with DX? If they did, that'd solve the issues I've mentioned. I'm well aware of the lack of DX.

I've not followed this much but why are they not looking to release this with windows version that can run 360/ps3 games that is also natively mouse & keyboard friendly.

A decent console that has all this would be a winner.

They are already creating controller profiles for most of the games on Steam, just plug in your favoured controller and away you go.

Your telling me that the console gaming market is stronger in potential then the PC market? Considering the twice yearly overall of graphics PC's get.

You could make a budget, premium and enthusiast range with i3, i5, i7 respectively and you'd be safe with them chips for at least 6 years, then you could allow plug and play graphics cards allowing you to upgrade them at will. High performance gaming at a price you can afford, distributed by steam.

They can use their own Linux OS and do a deal with google to run the store. Best of both worlds an instant app filled store and a games console.

You still haven't got a single point across as to why a gaming console even needs an app store. This isn't a phone/tablet...........

Emulators allready exist. You can allready use android App Store on windows. And winRT emulator is coming and it wouldn't even be that hard as they're both Linux based.

A smart tv isn't a tablet, Xbox 360 isn't a tablet, ps3 isn't a tablet. Yet they all have apps.
Why becuase they are essential for modern technology. Surprisingly people want to use media on a tv.

What the hell has two yearly gfx card refresh or i5/i7 got to do with anything.
Steam console by its nature is liekly to be a different market to current consoles. Mainly it's focused on pc gamers, not console gamers. I wouldn't expect it to have much impact on conventional console sales and as said be more aimed at us pc gamers ditching or adding to a desktop.

Like I have been trying to say, the prospect of a SteamBox is already flawed if they have no games on it except Valve games. The problem is DirectX.

I don't believe Gabe would even be considering this without some extra knowledge on exactly how they could get more games on such a console. I believe the only way this can work is if Gabe already knows that the PS4 will natively run and use OpenGL.

I can definitely see why Sony would see a benefit in using OpenGL if only to take some power away from DirectX. Remember the problems developers had at the start with developing games for the PS3? This would instantly solve that and avoid them having to give up and use DirectX.

It would essentially be an unholy alliance to directly cull Microsofts dominance with DirectX which is what keeps Windows sales so high in the PC gamer market.

We already knwo what his plan is and thats an emulator/wrapper to make direct x games work on Linux, that is his plan. Not he, knows he'll bring lots of valve only games to the system.

Please elaborate on what your definition of a app is, because to me, i don't see the need for things like Facebook, Twitter, eBay, instagram and so on when you will more then likely have a internet browser with full controller and keyboard/mouse support.

If you mean apps like Netflix, Love Film and so on, they will come, maybe not right away, but i really don't think that will make or break a sale.

What will make or break this console is accessibility, as in can the average joe pick it up and use it and how quickly and easily the games are distributed and how they play.

My point is it'll be vastly superior to consoles because of the constant upgrade ability of the device, if you statically force the console to say come with a i5, 8gb ram, 120gb SSD and then say a 7970, then you have you hardware static requirement, then all you do is make the graphics card hot swoppable and you then have a constantly self sufficent console that is upgraded graphically at the whim of the consumer and not the console makers.

Wouldn't that have been done ages ago if it was viable?

No, the reason it's now a rush job, is he is petrified of windows 8 and the Microsoft store. App stores are exactly like his model. Take a cut of other people's work. But they have a bigger budget and name and off course better integration.

He's allready said that is what he is doing.

I believe the intention here is for a direct joint attack on Microsoft from both Sony and Valve. Microsoft always has the power to break a DirectX wrapper or w/e for Linux, it's not a viable solution.

Valve want Microsoft to have less power over their ecosystem and Sony want DirectX to be less of a force in the game development market.

There is no doubt that what ever state this is in on release (good or bad) It will sell loads because of all the people who go runny whenever somebody says valve. I don't really see the benefit for the user over a "normal" pc. Do Valve open the platform so origin, UPLAY etc can be used or even retail disks. Will they allow change of hardware or even OS. I get the feeling that it will feature all the downsides of consoles and none of the benefits of owning a PC.
