Should i be Getting Slow Down & Low FPS ?

I recently purchased a new rig from overclockers with the following after being recommended the components on here

i7-3770K 3.50GHz (Ivybridge)
Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7850 OC Windforce 2X 2048MB GDDR5
Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 MotherboardTeamGroup Elite 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
OCZ Vertex 2E 120GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive
Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 500W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply
Thermalright True Spirit 140 CPU Cooler

The rig is great overall but my friend popped round recently and wanted to see Battlefield 3 in all its glory so thinking my PC was pretty high spec'd i ran it whacking everything upto full and if im quite honest was quite shocked at how badly it ran and what annoyed me even more was him telling me it ran perfectly on his mates i5 PC who had a Geforce 540 graphics card or something.

So my questions are this:

a) Should a computer of this spec be struggling with a game like Bf3, i know its hungry but i would have thought my rig was more than powerful enough ?

b) What are the cheapest ways to improve performance outside overclocking my rig, i have tried using Virtu MVP which does make quite a lot of difference, is one of my components dragging my computer down or perhaps bottlenecking my machine ?

c) Whenever i try to overclock my machine to ANYTHING OVER what its meant to be (including its built in overclocking software) my machine starts to become unstable, is this due to a component, should i maybe consider replacing my HSF or internal fans on my computer ? preferably as quiet as possible.

d) Can anyone with a similar Mobo and CPU or someone who knows tell me what speeds i could expect to overclock my machine so its stable and perhaps tell me the individual settings you used.

e) One last question is: i plan on getting another 7850 card at some point, firstly will my PSU handle it and secondly do i have to buy an identical card, does it have to be a 2gb one ? or does it just need to be a 7850 by the same manufacturer or can i buy ANY 7000 series radeon card ?

Sorry for all the questions i would appreciate as detailed answers to these questions as possible, thanks

for me the quick answer is no, as long as your not running on ult that is (a) i have 3 different pc's all with different cpu's and o/s installed from a windows xp to win 7 and now a win 8 test pc a dual core and quad core and a 8 core, the game will work well on your rig if you have a clean o/s, up to date drivers, least amount of background crap running at start up, a clean profile does this, and then you need to find what settings works best for you in the game, will take a few mins max to setup this, but once done will make all the difference, on ult it will be chuggy but look nice with a low fps count, turn off a few settings and you should see a big difference in fps plus not really notice how less it looks, same with farcry 3 tbh both will test the pc to max

h88tp://www.battlefieldza.co.za/tweaks/bf3-fps-config/ (using tweaks like this will make it run faster and look the same almost, with a little effort, it's not the game that sometimes at fault it's how its setup to run, some now days seem to think we all have the latest setup and doesn't auto our box into a playable game first time it check our spec, sometimes we need to do it oursleves, this is why a xbox and ps3 is easy but a pc game looks and plays most of the time better / faster etc, but not always the case as programming and game engine counts as well....

b/ overclocking would be it, adding a better card next, next with the least amount of % gained is to tweak your o/s, clean profile to boot into etc, also plenty of guides on gamer profiles, (what o's are you using?)

c/ there's loads of guides for this, find one for your m/b or i'll link you one

d/ sorry dont have it :( or i would

e/ no you will need a better psu and yes it has to be the same make and type for sli

Cheers for the reply, i have tweaked the game to run perfectly but it included dropping a lot of the setting..its just more the point that i thought a rig like this would run it on ultra, i will def look into these gaming profiles you mentioned though sounds interesting.

I have tried on a clean windows 7 and recently bought windows 8 both with upto date drivers on, windows 8 seems a little better to be honest. What do you mean what O's am i using ?

I have actually followed guides (not specific to my cpu, mobo and hsf with no luck, no matter what i do to overclock it, it always becomes unstable then crashes.

Do you think it would be worth replacing my HSF for overclocking ?

operating system, didn't see it in your first post

heat or wrong settings = fail when overclocking, ive never done it and tbh maybe wont as i like stable, have bought overclocked stuff from here, but wouldn't do it myself.

with the right motherboard and memory and some good cooling and the correct settings, someone here with more knowledge will help you hopefully, as im a noob with such stuff and wouldn't know where to start apart from searching for info etc, i'd find info, but wouldn't do the stuff myself as im older than most here and knows far too well what can and sometimes does go wrong :)

overclocking is an art, and im no artist, many here if giving your m/b plus bios version memory make and cpu in use with the correct cooling could im sure put you in the right dirrection

re post in here.

What FPS were you getting and at what settings? If you have 16x AA on and with everything set to ultra then yeh its not goanna get 60 fps.

on ult you will be lucky to get 30, change your res first, and btw what is your default res for the game, your monitor size as well,

my net pc uses a 22" set at 1680 x 1050 default, turning this down one makes a difference of a few % on the same settings, so a few tweaks or resolution change can make a difference, you try a few and see what works for you. good luck.

I have just set everything to Ultra & V-Sync on im getting 42 FPS normally and around 48fps when i enabled Virtu MVP although it seems massivley more responsive and playable with MVP on

benchmark the game,

Open console with the key above 'tab' (usually the 'tilde' key) and type (capitalization does not matter):

Render.drawFPS 1

This will display your immediate FPS in the right hand corner. You'll have to do it every time you enter a new server after exiting a game, unless there is a way to execute always via a script.

You can always use this performance graph for more details too, its very cool, but pretty large:

Render.PerfOverlayVisible 1

Green is CPU
Yellow is GPU (graphics)

If yellow is below green on the graph, then your CPU is holding back your GFX card.
Spikey graphs mean your performance is unstable.

leave settings for now and re post

then alter resolution and re benchmark it, then try a few settings

Why would you be complaining about 42 fps then? That seems very good with everything turne don.

if thats on ult then your getting better than me but then again im on a older card on this pc and games pc is in bits waiting for parts to come back as they came faulty :(

is it ? seems a little jerky, is that normal ? thats on FRAPS

thats good and will be jerky on ult, you need a lot faster cpu and vga to max out game and get 40+fps

so if you want to play that way, upgrade and add another vga card and then it will rock, can keep cpu as thats not the slow down.

job done, or wait and see what another driver update does for the game, got a few % faster with last driver update on its own

just ran Render.drawFPS 1 and it stayed green at 47ish ?
but then ran Render.PerfOverlayVisible 1 and the green and yellow lines stayed similar but the number at the bottom where it says avg was 23, is that FPS ? because it doesn't seem to tie in with drawFPS ?

also is it normal that my computer locks up whenever I overclock ? im not talking whacking 30% of an overclock on it, I mean if I do the slightest overclock on GPU or CPU either in bios or the windows tune up software that comes with the motherboard, before buying my computer I was going to buy a pre overclocked rig of the same cpu clocked at 4.5ghz, how do they achieve something like that, is my HSF or something letting me down ?
