Being Fat / Getting Fat..

Hey folks.

Im just curious if people who are fat, or feel themselves getting fat, can see anything in their life they admit is directly related.

Im one of these so called lucky people who simply doesnt gain weight unless I actively try to eat about 4-5000 calories a day. Im 6ft 3 and pretty lean.

Currently Im feeling pretty puny as Ive dropped about half a stone. Ive always been self conscious of my weight but from a skinny perspective.

This is open to anyone really, fat or thin.

Can you clearly see yourself why you are larger or smaller, or do you feel its maybe just down to genetics?

Ill be off to tuck into a large dominoes pizza tonight and I often eat junk food. Ok maybe my insides are a bit clogged up but I exercise quite regularly. Its frustrating that I struggle to gain weight yet some people get massive in what seems a short space of time.


Sorry Im not much good at putting together topics for discussion, hopefully this makes sense :)
 
I'm the same as you, 6ft and skinny. I find it hard to put on weight, but I know it's because I just don't eat enough and never bother with the gym :p Part of the problem is eating a lot costs a lot, and I'm in the middle of nowhere.

Moving to London in the new year for a new job, so hopefully I'll earn more, eat more and lift more :)
 
It will catch up with you.

This is something people have always said to me too. Ever since I was about 16 and stick thin. I got all the way to 25-26 when I started going to the gym and actively trying to gain weight before I actually put on any pounds.

Is there any truth in this statement though, do people naturally become less able to stay slim, ignoring activity levels.
 
I'm not fat. Yet. But I could easily get fat within a short amount of time. I don't really count calories, but I do have to watch what I eat or else I gain weight very quickly. Unfortunately, I am not one of those who can eat what they want.
 
My appetite. I will eat and eat anything. I lost weight a few times and always relapsed but this time have managed to keep it under control for over a year. I had to virtually cut out sugar and crisps and rarely snack anymore.

I still eat takeaways, chips, large pieces of meat and fatty food but eliminating snacking on crap has been incredibly effective.

Im the same as you with the Takeaways and fatty foods. But I think my snacking levels must be a lot lower than yours because I dont really get anything more than a little podgy belly.

When you were snacking, how often was it, and what kind of things. Just crisps, fizzy pop and chocolate?
 
I have to watch what I eat and drink or I will pile on the pounds, just by looking at a cream cake I can feel my stomach getting larger!

I'm 6ft and currently 18 st I cycle 20+miles each week and walk everywhere else as i don't have a car, I also eat less than 1700 calories a day! On the down side i sit on my arse all day driving my bus :(

This is one thing that annoys me, people don't understand that being a skinny man isn't a great feeling.

I once fell out with a female work colleague after she made a comment about me being 'skinny' at a dinner. To be fair to her I'd just gone through a breakup and wasn't feeling the best so snapped about how I didn't comment on her eating more than everyone else (she wasn't slim so got upset by my answer).

It sounds a bit pathetic but in the same way women complain about seeing stick thin models all the time lowering their self esteem, I would argue seeing six packed, big biceped men has a similar effect on us skinny blokes.

You are right mate, I used to have issues years ago where I wouldnt go out the house without wearing a tracktop or sweatshirt. As long as my arms were covered I was ok. In tshirts I just felt like a right loser.

Recent years I ate more and hit the gym and now some people say Im "buff" occasionally which has done wonders for self esteem. I wholeheartedly recommend hitting a gym and getting over your issues.
 
I have to keep on top of doing phys.

I feel like if I eat anything crap It almost instantly makes me feel crap. I used to be able to eat an unreal amount of junk, soon as I hit 21 it started turning against me.
 
I can barely eat over 2k calories without slowly gaining weight these days, when I was in my teens/early twenties I could eat almost anything and never have to worry.

You probably have the same body type as me. I'm 6'4" and 13 stone, I'm far from being underweight but I'm offered described as 'lanky' by bantering mates.

I don't have 'issues' as such, the time above happened because of the emotions I was feeling at the time. I've been called "skinny" as a compliment many times before and taken it as one.
 
I'm about 5'11 with quite an athletic build. I'd say my bodyfat would be around 15% currently. I don't eat any crisps, sweats etc, all I really drink is water or maybe an energy drink and I just stay around the weight I am. I think I would find it hard to lose body fat or gain body fat, without drastically changing.

So to answer your question - I'd say we do have a genetically predetermined build or whatever you want to call it.
 
Because of my lifestyle (weight training and eating the right stuff) I'm always on top of my weight. I'd noticed quite quickly if I was gaining weight and would be able to pin point why.
 
Yeah, your metabolism will slow down with age.

I can vouch for this. In my early 30s and seeing that already. The trouble is when you're naturally skinny you tend to get a pot belly rather than fat all over.

So next time you go to the pub and see a bloke in his 50s with a huge beer belly but with one chin, it's probably not the beer but the fact he was naturally skinny and his metabolism has gone to pot.

Too much beer & snacking late at night (after aforementioned beer), combined with a lack of any real exercise.

Nothing magical about my weight gains ;)

Once or twice a day but it would be a large bar of chocolate, half a cheesecake and/or a 750g bag of crisps. And if there were free cakes at work 6+ doughnuts etc and that would be on top of a normal healthy-ish diet.
