Do people still put their phones on the tables in pubs?

I remember in the 90s/early 2000s this was the done thing. You go to the pub and everyone puts their phones down on the table, as if having people around you wasn't enough. With cigarette boxes next to them.

I can't remember when I last saw someone do this but is it still relatively common practice for some people? And does anyone else think it's a bit rude, especially on a one to one basis?

Surely the only reason people ever did this was because sitting down with phones and cigarettes in your pockets was annoying. I imagine people do it even more now with slimmer jeans being a la mode.

Not really. For the most part people are too scared they'll either forget it, or have it swiped by a *****. Phones have gone up in prices since the early 2000's though. Back then a new phone was max £100-150. Nowadays that'll get you a cheapo android phone.

Wasn't it because it was trendy? And also because teens think it's cool to smoke [well, I did].

Yes, I remember back when I was in Uni at the time that the main reason people seemed to do it was to show off their phones.

Back then, people were always upgrading their phones and they were constantly evolving, so you had things like colour screens, flashing lights, smaller size, camera etc. It was quite often a talking point.

These days, I don't think people upgrade their phones quite so often, for the most part. Plus if everyone got their phones out these days, I'm sure you would likely just have an entire table of iPhones and the odd phone by another manufacturer.

I think most people these days realise that a phone doesn't make you look important.

Hang on.....

Nope I just checked and nobody cares:D

It's more likely now with phones being bigger imo.

You never had to sit in the pub with a Siemens C25 in your pocket. I don't even notice I've got my phone in my pocket when I sit in the pub these days. Nokia were the first ones to start brining out "thinner" phones in the late 90s, where you could have them in your pocket and not notice them. Nokia 3210 is one that springs to memory. Much thinner than the C25 I had.

Nope. not worried about theft, not many people go to my local of choice, just my mates (and me to be fair) have a habbit of posting to the facebooks of unattended phones.

My local is like that. Everyone knows everyone. I can pop in for a few pints by myself and leave phone/wallet/cigs on the table and nobody would touch it. Wouldn't dream of doing that in one of the awful mainstream pubs though.

We play the phones on the table game. When we get to the pub everyone puts their mobile into the middle of the table, and the first person to retrieve theirs has to buy everyone a drink.

No more sat in silence with everyone on Facebook. Wonderful.

No, I don't even leave my drink unattended in those places. No doubt some git would spit in it.

I like that will have to try it next time I'm out with anti social bookface people

Far more likely to be a table of Samsung/Android phones.
