Could you use deadly force to defend an animal / pet?

I would 100% kill hannibal assuming he was guilty
The dog has done less wrong by our human standards

As to the thread title. I would go to prison. I can't exactly say how I'd react to seeing the act, i would hope I would beat the attacker off without killing him, but if it was pet vs attacker in heat of the moment.. I might end up hoping for a jury of animal rights activists

As above really, say someone took it upon themselves and attempted to kill your pet, cat/dog or what ever. Say to defend your pet you attacked the attacker and he died accidently, would you be charged?

Or the only way to protect pet, was to kill the attacker.

For example, a man holds a gun to your pet's head and the only way to save it was for you to shoot to kill first?

For example, a man holds a gun to your child's head and the only way to save him/her was for you to shoot to kill first? Surely you wouldnt be charged there.

Edit this situation is better explained

No because I value human life over that of a pet for many reasons because I'm not mental.

I have owned many pets and they were not part of the family, I did not shed a tear when they died or went.

I'm obviously referring to top tier pets (cats, dogs, pigs, etc) rather than hamster/goldfish level.

I don't see the point in having a pet if you aren't going to love it as one of your own kin.

Life expectancy
Remorse for actions
Repercussions on family and friends if the person you have killed.
Etc...

things a "top tier" pet's life is different to a humans. An animal's life is not worth that of a humans if their is no other threat other than that to the animals life.

Why do you value a cat or dog over a gold fish??

if someone was to try and harm one of my pets i would think nothing of hitting them with a baseball bat and then spitting on them as they lay on the floor

You don't think a human stating that humans are 'special' and somehow distinct from the rest of the animal kingdom is egotistical of us as a species?

I believe that all animals species are distinct and special, ourselves included. I also see nothing wrong with valuing the life of a member of your own species over that of another.

An animal's life is not worth that of a humans

Based on what objective logic?

Is the world some big computer game whereby all life are trying to accomplish some kind of goal and only the human characters have the ability to achieve that goal?

If anything, if the Earth was to judge and could let a species go and I'm pretty sure she'd choose humans. When was the last time you heard of animals purposely pumping CO2 into the air just to make transportation a little easier, when was the last time an animal started chopping down the rain forest?
