Anyone know what's going on here?

Ok, so in our house we have an 'emergency' hallway light thing on every floor. That looks like this normally:

Anyway, yesterday one of the light bulbs blew. Didn't really think much of it. Figured I'd inform the landlords when I got around to it, and left it at that.

Anyway, just had a look at it as I walked past... to be greeted by this:

Slightly unsettling I must say.

Due to us having multiple switches for that light, frankly I have no idea whether it is on or off at the moment (useful I know), but the letting agent is coming around tomorrow anyway, to do some safety checks. I'm going to get them to have a look at it then, and leave it for now.

Current guess is it's some kind of water leak, but anyone know any better?

Well that's the current plan. Anyone in the know think I need to call the 'emergency' maintenance number so to speak...?

Does look like sewage has leaked into the fitting :eek:

keep a eye out just in case water starts dripping out of the fitting.

It will be ok for tomorrow, put something under it and move anything that might get wet/damaged from nearby in case it drops or more water leaks than it can hold.

Yeah, that was my thought :S

It definitely looked like sewage due to the floatingy bits xD

looks like rusty water. hard to tell on my phone. what's above it (toilet, bath etc)

Well, it's my room above that light.... Mind you there is a toilet and shower in here that I use. So it is quite disturbing.

For reference. Directly above is a landing from a hallway. Slightly to the side of the photo, above that is an suite. There's another two bathrooms on that floor, so I can imagine some kind of piping runs through it...

It might be were water has got into the fitting and corroded the metal tray were the ballast sits and thats rust!

If there is sawdust and other dust in the ceiling that and the wood spars or nails and fasteners can colour the water.

Just thought there is actually a fridge quite close by to where it is overhead. Seems to be working fine, but thought it might be worth mentioning.

Yes, until tomorrow when someone who knows more about it (read as: 'if they make a mess they can clean it up rather than me'), can deal with it.

Are you sure there's fluid in there?

It could be smoke from a burnt out bulb/fitting

There is a damp patch around the light fitting.
