People that can't hold their drink

the thing i think is a bit odd is ,if your involved in an rta(road traffic accident) you have to pay for the ambulance but not if you're a drunk idiot ?.

I agree completely, and I think anyone who has seen it from our side Burnsy would as well. It would have course be a massive help if the pubs and clubs actually followed the licensing laws and refused to serve people who were already intoxicated.

I hate doing Friday and Saturday nights in the town. I do my best to get people to see reason, but nine times out of ten it just goes in one ear and out of the other.

One of the biggest issues with this country at the moment. Smokers are reviled left right and centre, yet binge drinking is encouraged. Society needs to start looking at itself.

Not only does our A&E take in over 80 drink related cases a day but our Trust is going to erect smoking shelters for patients and visitors with two of them outside maternity and the cancer centre.
I would also like to add that a good % of drink related cases helps to keep me in a job in Clinical Negligence so I'm not complaining (and not from the staff drinking either).

I recon clubs/pubs should start shutting earlier and it should be harder to buy booze from every corner shop. Start with reducing stock levels.

Same with smokers. Only because there's a lot of money to be made in it nothing will be done plus it creates business.

I tend to agree, I know a few people who are like this everytime we go out because they try to keep up with me which for most is a bad idea.

Then I end up making sure they get home safe... :s

I reckon that people should be fined if they require emergency treatment deemed to be as a result of their intoxication. I know it's not as straightforward as that but it's such a drain on resources and money.

I've long advocated the following:

Longer sentences for crimes committed whilst under the influence of drink
No medical assistance for people too drunk to describe the problem
Licencing drinkers - three strikes and your licence is revoked, any attempt to drink or obtain alcohol ever again will lead to a severe punishment

Alcohol is abused far too much by people who are far too stupid to deserve the freedom to abuse it.

That way the majority who are responsible don't have to be subject to minimum pricing etc. just because some others cannot take their drink.

What kind of person refuses to help another person? So you'd rather them be left to die? That's sick!

I think what he means is when someone is spouting crap and being abusive to A&E staff or generally not co-operating then treatment should be refused. Very grey, I can't personally see such a policy of having any benefit.

The best bet would be to heavily invest on rehabilitation for people with alcohol problems, especially if brought before court, rather than say harsher sentences which would cost even more money.

Ban Drink & Legalise Weed then old bill will only have to worry about finding them munchies & waking them up.
No problems with any of the public/Nurses/Old Bill as Weed head will be all loved up & mellow.

Government owes me Big time for that little gem. :p

Our hospitals A&E department has around 250 to 300 patients every day and over 1/3 are alcohol related.

And that's not mentioning the attacks. We lost a charge nurse many years back because a group of drunken idiots decided they didn't like the fact he was gay. So they waited till he finished his shift and did that every so brave 10 on 1 thing.

One thing I've learned going back to college as the old fart of the intake is that a 'person who can't hold their drink' is what's referred to as a 'legend' these days, and often seen by the youngsters as some sort of folk hero.

Seriously, one guy's failed pretty much every exam he's sat this year and is probably teetering on the brink of getting kicked off the course by his company, all because he goes out and gets wrecked, then misses classes or sacks off revision before exams just so can go to 'Koosday' or something. Idiot.

I'm 37 now and can hand on heart say I have never got so drunk I didn't know what I was doing, even in my younger years...

I know what my limits are and like to know I'm in control, I like a bottle of wine at home with the girlfriend at the weekend and a couple of pints with the lads down the pub but to get so drunk you are unable to stand or speak is for me the worse thing ever, that isn't enjoyable its the opposite in fact ....

Are the pubs and clubs to blame with their cheap offers? I know younger guys that neck a bottle of vodka between them prior to going out on the town?

I went to Zante a couple of years back with a friend after I spilt from my wife (just wanted a cheap week in the sun) some of the states I saw out there was scary, girls laying in the gutter had wet themselves, guys covered in their own vomit .... Surely this will damage their liver and kidneys after a few years of abuse .....

Licensing drinkers?! Don't treat people?!

Those policies belong in the Chinas of the world. That's so many people's response to a problem, treat everyone like children. It doesn't work and is point blank moronic.

People should be charged for wrongly using A&E and wrongly calling out ambulances but you cannot advocate such stupidly draconian measures on a population. Talk about eroding freedoms.

I think you answered your own question. If someone is determined to get drunk, they will. Either by 'warming up' at home or getting smashed on whatever's cheap while they're out.
Our drinking culture is childish and embarrassing.

If you go to nearly anywhere else in Europe, you'll see people enjoying alcohol, not drinking to get utterly annihilated.

I am guilty of getting horrendously drunk on occasion, but never when I'm out and about. Usually just overindulging on some nice whisky or beer with friends.
