torrent client

uTorrent is the best one out of the lot, use an earlier version, I recommend version 1.8.2.
I cannot link to a download location at the moment as I'm on a works computer right now, I'll dig up a link when I get home for you.

I've tried pretty much all of them, the last time I use qBittorrent but it suffered a bug whereby it would drop all clients/nodes/dht etc down to 1 or 0 and just sit there.
Vuze is too bloated much like the recent uTorrent builds and all the rest of the clients out there aren't that well built or lack essential features.

You can removed the ads.

Google is your friend.
Write that down on a post it note and stick it on the monitor bezel.

utorrent version 1.6.1 is superior version of utorrent as it doesn't have any of that new nonsens on it.

Also disabled DHT and PXE you will get better speeds.

Thanks for that, didn't know about it.

Stupid how the program that always boasted about being the tiniest client ever is now becoming full of ****. Does my head in!

Problem with older versions is the lack of bug and security fixes.

If you want uTorrent then using the new version and disabling the adds/offers in the preferences is the best option tbh. You only need to do it once.

However using anything pre 2.0 is just a bad plan if you want a simple/clean client on install as there are literally dozens of constantly updated (read more secure) clients around than the mystical 1.6 utorrent - which people cling to out of nostalgia (don't want to change), which is understandable as the ui is possibly the best around. Still, disabling the things they don't like in the newer versions would be a better approach but to each their own.

Here are a handful of alternatives by the way http://torrentfreak.com/top-10-utorrent-alternatives-120819/

Is there any truth in the v3 of uTorrent containing behaviour tracking code?
It wouldn't be of any concern to me as I only use torrents for BBC radio shows but it is something to be aware of for those who use torrents for sourcing other materials.

Don't be silly.

Do the newer versions have the Logger tab? I tried one a while ago and switched back as I couldn't find anywhere to view the log.

Just upgraded to the latest version (after carefully checking each part of the download & install process and unticking / choosing no to the extra unwanted crap) and it has a logger tab.

V3.2 (iirc) was the last official version before they added the crapware.

Glad to see there's a way to disable the ads though :)

Just chiming in with my thoughts. I switched to Deluge recently since utorrent has gone to the dogs.

Pros: open source, simple interface, excellent download speeds (it's said to deal well with traffic shaped connections), plugins provide any extra needed functions (e.g. scheduler), powerful list of settings.
Cons: seems to be using up to 3% of cpu all the time, even with no torrents(?). This is on vista so maybe an old bug.

Well worth a look.

Deluge has a wide-array of features, including:

Core/UI split allowing Deluge to run as a daemon
Connect remotely to the Deluge daemon
Web UI
Console UI
GTK+ UI
BitTorrent Protocol Encryption
Mainline DHT
Local Peer Discovery (aka LSD)
FAST protocol extension
µTorrent Peer Exchange
UPnP and NAT-PMP
Proxy support
Web seed
Private Torrents
Global and per-torrent speed limits
Configurable bandwidth scheduler
Password protection
RSS (via Plugin)
Other libtorrent features
And much more!
