Sadly you have missed something. Do you have any idea how hard it was leaving school in 1989 with 3 million people unemployed and no jobs to go for ? I worked my ass off in a YTS scheme and then later an Employment Training Scheme both of which yielded no job. Both of which were the governments way of manipulating the jobless figures and forcing people to work full time for a pittance. Then a number of semi-skilled jobs, each of which found me redundant as the factories closed. It was a tough time believe me.

I find your comment a little insulting. I was not born with a silver spoon up my ass. I've had to work very hard to get what I have now.

I think in 89 it was closer to 2M, I left when it was 3M circa 1984/5 and I found work and like you I wasn't born with a silver spoon or did I leave with a degree or special qualifications, but I was tenacious. However, I didn't live in a big city and spent every night reading the jobs sections and in the end a college teacher pointed me towards a job as a programmer and I got it so was perhaps in right skill set at right time..

Wishing you the best maggie.

Great PM, and exactly what the country needed to wash off the mess that a previous labour government had created. Wow doesn't that sound familiar ;) for those who were not about to see the last mess they created.

Say what you like about her and her government it absolutely had to happen just like what we are going through now with a legacy left by the last labour government.
Union corruption was rife and they were holding the rest of the country to ransom, they never change and still try to work the same way even today.

I'm sorry if you found it insulting. At the end of the day though, you worked hard, a few things didn't work out, and then you found something that did work, and now you're reaping the benefits (one being the satisfaction at having earned what you have).

I'm not trying to make light of being out of work / job searching etc. I was made redundant a couple of months ago - I'm not bitter or looking to blame anyone though, it's currently the nature of the industry I was in. I'll just have to find some other way to earn money.

I cannot accept she outlived my dad who was made redundant during her reign. He then hit the skids a little but pulled himself out.

He worked voluntary, full time, until he died of cancer in September at the age of 74. I found his body and he had been getting ready for work. And yet the beast lives.

Get well soon!

I wasn't alive at the time so shouldn't comment, but from what I've read most of her policies made sense. Anyways, even if you didn't agree with her yourself, the beauty of a democracy is that the majority of people did!

From all I can tell from this thread she stopped people getting milk for free. Why is that so bad?

While I wouldn't wish death upon anybody, I not going to pretend someone is great just because they are close to death.

I'm not suprised someone like you would pipe in with something so glib. She was a truely great woman, not only because she was a woman in an era that was completely sexist and misogynistic. But she was quite simply the best PM the country had since Churchill and still not bettered since. If it wasn't for her this country would be a 2nd world country like Spain, Itaily or Greece. She saved us from a Labour government that was systematically dismantling the country inside out. And which they almost did again in the last term they had.

Labour has never been fit to rule because they try to give greedy underclass what they want rather then what they need in a country with limited resources

Gotta love the way that a person who took things away and made lives a bit harder but made the country much stronger is seen in a worse light than Blair/Brown who gave people things yet bankrupted the country in the process and brought about our current situation :P

If she had lost her elections to some Labour wimp then today the Falklands would belong to Argentina (and most likely Gibraltar to Spain as a result). We would be spending Euros and be in a much weaker position in Europe and the world.

I remember free school milk, it used to be absolutely rank, they used to leave it outside in a big pile of crates that used to stink through milk spillage and in the summer it'd all go off and be completely disgusting to drink and in the winter it would freeze up solid.
