Can you not just plug in the 4 pin pwm to a 3pin? I know it works for 3 pin fans in 4 pin connectors

3 pin males would normally fit 4 pin PWM headers though as they have the special 3/4 pin arrangement.

A 3 pin extension would in that case do the same basic job.

No that wont work, its a width issue.
