Hello i am building a new pc and i need to purchase an operating system to install.

I am used to windows 7 but as win 8 is almost same cost i was wondering if i should take the leap.

Other alternative which i prefer is purchasing win 7 and then upgrading at a later date if preffered but only if this is cost effective also.

Pc will be used for gaming and browsing and autocad design at times.

Whats peoples views if they were in the same position.

I'd go with 8 because I don't see why you would buy an older OS, but of course the UI is polarizing and you might want to try it out before you commit.

Win8 is cheaper and newer so go with that, personally like Win8 a lot ,infact upgraded three of my PCs that had Win7 on them, btw no issues in gaming or anything else so a very polised OS by Microsoft.

Win8 is easy to use, anybody that says otherwise should stick with consoles, you can customize the desktop just like you can on Win7..

W8 is cheaper, newer, faster, smaller on disk. At some point you going to do it anyway.

Check all your existing software is supported.

I'd go with 8, it's faster and more polished than 7. You'll get used to the start screen (after using it for a couple months I even like it ) and that's the only big interface change which is forced on you.

thanks for advice guys, 8 being faster is a plus of course. Im going to read the forums abit more as well i think get an idea what ppl think of 8.

thing is as well. i can buy win 7 pro and win 8 pro for exact same price like pointed out above..

Ppl nvr like when things change and im hoping this is the reason for most of the negative comments on it.

The only thing i would say, since i have windows 8 on my work pc, that older softwares really do not enjoy it.

We have somewhat oldish licences for softwares that windows 8 now hates.
I have the windows 8 pc for general email use and an xp pc next to it for all the software use.

Even in compatibility mode they don't enjoy working.

I did the other day , after much ummin n rrring , but i wouldnt have bothered or considered it if it was"nt £25 . It is better and as the days go buy things will all work no doubt , Everything I did do , I now have a slightly better polished windows to do it on that all my stuff works now , except media center which im still waiting for the key .

If your going new just go for it , mine seems to boot straight to desktop after i signed in , so i have to go out me way for the metro thing , which is IMO a gimmick , but its nice to browse when you got nothing better to do .

oN the £24 upgrade. I mean i have an old XP OEM key but do not have a copy on win 7 to upgrade.

Can i do the £24 upgrade without having THE OLD XP OEM installed?

Win 8 all the way, no point in w7, even if you don't like metro you can't install the start menu via third party, although its pointless and you might as well get used to it. Metro is here to stay, it is far from a fad and is in fact the saviour of MS, as desktops continue to slide I to a niche market and mobile pcs continue to boom.
Metro will get better with each update.

Also remember w8 oem is infant retail, where w7 oem has heavy restrictions.

+1 and you can ignore that new GUI if you really feel the need (I'm use to it now) and get lots of new improvements over Windows 7.

Similar in price maybe, but note that you'll have a free upgrade route to the Professional edition of Windows 8 vs the features of Windows 7 Home Premium.

Buy windows 98 because of newfangled. Change is bad, m'kay.

Actually I went with Win 8 and its pretty good once you get used to it.

I'm not a big fan of the new interface in 8, but I'd still recommend getting it over 7 as it is faster, newer and you will in the future anyway, more than likely. I'm more used to the interface now, but it still needs work for desktops. Maybe MS will adapt it.

I stuck with 7 as I can't stand Metro and I don't see the point in upgrading to 8 just to make it look like 7 again.

But I did give 8 a go before I decided I didn't like it, and I recommend you do the same.
