Seems like a fair idea in principle - they're a burden on the social security system and likely to be an unnecessary burden on the NHS too... if you're relying on the rest of society to support you then you shouldn't really have any excuses when it comes to overeating... you've got plenty of time to prepare proper meals and get some exercise if you're not working.

Being poor doesn't mean you have to eat ready meals and takeaways all the time - I've got sympathy for a working single mother who genuinely is pushed for time and so relies on microwave food from Iceland - someone who is unemployed on the other hand could save a load of money by not buying takeaways and processed food. Rice, pasta, veg... its not expensive - you don't need to eat meat for every meal.

Healthy food is cheap. It's just that a lot of fat people are too lazy to cook from scratch or don't know what to buy unless it comes in a microwaveable tray.

Fair enough.

Providing they implement the same thing for MPs expenses too....

Totally unenforceable.

They're using smart cards for local leisure centres to check. So whilst the guy who goes out and buys an exercise bike and weights and uses them at home gets his benefits docked, the guy that waddles over to his local leisure centre, swipes in and spends the day in their canteen continues to get paid.

What a totally silly purposal.
It even goes against the report, which isn't even aimed at obese but just everyone. Let alone the stupid purposes implementation.
And the fact is is not based on anything meaningful. These people don't have jobs due to being obese, so why single them out.

Little bit daft. When there are people out there whom are Obesse and can't help it. I know people with complex needs, whom are lightly obeese and can't even talk yet alone go to the Gymn.

So really it's a stupid idea

This is a dangerous proposal, it could force people to panic and try to lose weight as quickly as possible: making themselves sick, taking unhealthy diet pills, or just simply refusing to eat. Age, and other conflicting medical conditions could complicate this further.

If the government wants to take responsibility for the health of the nation, then it should also take responsibility for the potential ill-health and/or death this proposal could cause.

Excellent, its been about 8 weeks since the last time this thread happened, about time it was rehashed again.

Can I suggest next week we try to squeeze in a thread about an aeroplane on a treadmill trying to take off.

Carry on.

In an ideal world I'd agree with it but its just going to end up with people whose lives are already a misery due to a problem with weight are made even more of a misery as the system can't deal with the complexity of the issue.

And as always those with are abusing the system that its supposed to target will find ways around it and those who are honest and genuienly have a problem will suffer.
