Do you guys think we are slipping ever closer to using the word "like" as shown in the thread title as part of accepted queens english?

"I was like hey man do you like my ride and he's like yeah dude your ride is like wowzers and they're like hey I wish I could be that guy like"

Is the above sentence going to be accepted as proper english in future?

I worry sometimes we are overusing the word like in this way and its really going to be incredibly ingrained in us all and will become part of ordinary english.

Anyone else worried?

Like totally.

I say we return to having television broadcasts conducted in a Cholmondley Warner fashion. That'll put a stop to it.

"Guys" has slipped into ordinary English, and not many people use chaps or fellows anymore. Language evolves :)

Nope. Most young people where I live speak in this manner & have done for years. You only have to watch TOWIE.

My mum said the other day my little sister used to speak in this manner many moons ago when she was in her late teens/early 20's (shes 44 now) & it drove her mad. I can safely say I never noticed at the time. :o

Nobody I know or meet speaks like that so it won't become proper English. Like I guess the plebs will carry on using it. :p

The vernacular evolves. Language is malleable and as such will always be used, manipulated, abused and changed owing to all kinds of cultural and social stimulii.

Like seriously OP why do you care?

I don't think the whole 'like' thing is quite as prevalent now as it was in the late 90s.

If anything, the more disturbing youth speak these days is the Jamaican Patois that so many young people talk with.

"Oh my dayz, Ya get me me blud? Me and U is fam!"

We are nevr getting back together, like ever!!

I remember when we broke up the first time
Saying this is it, I've had enough, 'cause like
We haven't seen each other in a month
When you, said you, needed space, what?
Then you come around again and say
Baby, I miss you and I swear I'm gonna change
Trust me, remember how that lasted for a day
I say, I hate you, we break up, you call me, I love you

Oooh we called it off again last night
But Oooh, this time I'm telling you, I'm telling you
We are never ever ever getting back together
We are never ever ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends talk
To my friends talk to me
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together
Like ever...

I'm really gonna miss you picking fights
And me, falling for a screaming that I'm right
And you, will hide away and find your piece of mind with some indie record that's much cooler than mine

Oooh you called me up again tonight
But Oooh, this time I'm telling you, I'm telling you
We are never ever ever getting back together
We are never ever ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends talk
To my friends talk to me
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together

I used to think, that we, were forever ever ever
And I used to say never say never
Huh, he calls me up and he's like, I still love you
And i'm like, i'm just, I mean this is exhausting, you know
We are never getting back together, like ever!!

We are never ever ever getting back together
We are never ever ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends talk
To my friends talk to me
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together
We, oooh, oooh, not back together, we
Oh, getting back togetherYou go talk to your friends talk
And my friends talk to me
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together
