Virgin Media Discussion Thread

That'll be your router settings. There'll be something in the settings about blocking ping requests, turn that off and the graph will start working correctly.

There was indeed a tick box with no tick in it in the settings - "Respond to ICMP echo requests sent to WAN IP". Stuck a tick in it now, I'll monitor it for a while. Hopefully the lag spikes are just a temporary glitch on my line, as it's been rock solid for the last few months. Cheers :)

"Dear Mr Little, we are sorry for your recent loss of service, however we cannot give you anymore credit refunds at this stage. It appears from our records you have only paid £11 to Virgin Media since July, with over £100 in credit refunds.”

AHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH excellent! Good job haha,

According to the Virgin Media support forums, only customers who are on the XL package will receive the upgrade to 60Mbps. I think I'm on the L package - 20Mbps originally, upgraded for free to 30Mbps at some point - and apparently I won't be getting an upgrade because I've already had mine.

garbage!

I was on the old 20mbps package until last month when I phoned up to complain about the crap service I'd received from the India call centre (what a shock) the guy in the UK looked at the package I was on and upgraded me to the 60mb package.

Give them a call and ask for the upgrade, just dont talk to the guys in India that wont help.

Still in two minds if i should stay with Virgin Media. Virgin media has been excellent for me. Of course im not happy with the price increase.

Currently on 20mb, m+ tv and talk L for £28 and its increasing by £2.20 something like that.

Rang them up and the best they can offer is £25 for 20mb and free evening and weekends. Saving of £3. Of course thats, removing the tv package. Which is fine. I've got Sky for that.

Should i snap it up or should i haggle a bit more?

They do look a little low but if you aren't having any problems? I think -7 to +7 is the acceptable range.

If you want them adjusting you should try posting on the Virgin forums.

It's 8:30pm on Friday night, I'd say that's peak time so is that why my downloads are only at 800Kbps on a 30MB connection!? I thought they only capped you if you downloaded more than 7GB in 24 hours.

The free Doublespeed upgrade will take XL20 or XL30 customers onto the ne XL60. If you are on L20 you won't get a free upgrade. However if you're paying a lot then Customer Services will reduce your bill and upgrade you if they can.

Those levels are fine mate. What are your levels for Upstream channels?

Caps for your package are listed here. There is also a policy which can throttle p2p traffic.

How are you connecting? PC, Laptop? Wireless or wired? How are you testing the speed?

Connecting via Ethernet, measuring speed by looking at the speed Alt Binz is showing my download at. Normally it's around 2.9Mbps but tonight it's 800kbps.

That link you posted doesn't say anything about peak times, just that if I download more than 7000MB I get throttled for 5 hours.

The table I linked shows you the two periods of the day that your download has a cap for, 1000-1500 and 1600-2100. So if you download 3.5GB between 4pm and 9pm, your speeds will be capped at 15Mbps (~1.8MB/s) for 5 hours from that point on.

Try checking your speed here without any downloads running. You should be ~30,000Kbps uncapped or 15,000Kbps capped. Any less via a wired connection and you may have an area fault or line fault and should call VM Tech Support.

Tried to get my free upgrade sorted after ringing up but they said it would take too much power to just upgrade individual houses and isn't how they do it so I have to wait another month. Bit annoyed after reading people on here phoning up and getting their upgrade sorted over the phone

Have been getting awful service from my connection these last few weeks.

Is there anything unusual here?:

Ring again. It sounds like you got through to the muppet of the team.

Speedtessts come back with 30meg down and 1.9meg up so that's good. It's midnight and i'm still downloading at 500kbps :( Think I'm gonna call Virgin, I should be downloading closer to 3mbps

EDIT: it's just jumped to 3mbps!? Normally with Alt Binz it downloads at the maximum rate as soon as you click connect but now it steadily speeds up
