How do you Barter with a car dealership? (Used Car)

Youre getting softer. Years ago youd rant page after page on how ridiculous a purchase like that is.

It almost sounds like youve started to subscribe to the "as long as he is happy..." theory!

It's a fairly ridiculous buy but that doesnt therefore mean he would instead go out and buy a £2-3k car.

But, yea, I guess I'm a bit less dog-with-bone these days. I'll have a go at explaining why an idea isnt the best or what might be better but if it's pretty clear that he's decided on a particular path colliding with an immovable wall does nothing but create internet lulz :p

The best thing we can do is offer advice on options he might reasonably consider. a £2k car isnt that - thats a heck of a change of aspiration - but a newer Fiesta for the same money or an older Polo for less money might be more open to consideration.

£3K car now, £6K car later, £12K in a few years?
either way there is more fun to be had than buying a boring £11K Polo with a miserable 1.2l engine.

I really don't get buying super shiny ecoboxes, it is exactly what pensioners do.

"Oh yes, this shiny 1.2l Polo will see me out 'till my twilight years, then when I die I'll pass it on to my Grandson"

At 24, if you are not hankering after something with massive turbos then there is something wrong with you :p

If you are a car enthusiast, sure.

Or perhaps he isn't interested in cars and just wants something nice for going from A to B.

At 24 he's going to be dating too, same money gets a GTI and suddenly he's a bit more interesting.

I know this isn't giving him what he asked for, I'm saying he's got his question wrong.

Did you actually just post that? I mean... really? Most girls are not even going to notice the trim level of his car let alone be interested or not depending on whether it's an SE or a GTI.

Unless they are 15.

I know a girl who can rebuild engines, another whose fun car is a rally spec scooby, and my wife was a rally driver many years ago. I know lots of girls who work for car companies, one could probably tell you about the trim level on Bentleys for the past 100 years.

Don't assume girls know nothing about cars :p

Are they all shallow enough to decide whether to continue to date somebody based on whether his Polo is a particular trim level?

This! Surely if someone decides not to date you based on your car choice, they are not worth a toss anyway

A guy round the corner has a Polo GTI, the women literally queue to his front door. I had no such luck with my old 16V :(

OMG, women in shallow choices shocker

Maybe check out the passenger in the next sports car you see for the blindingly obvious answer.

I know one who certainly is (very much into classic Minis - so much so in fact that it's retarded and basically ruined her marriage and my brother-in-law's life). I'm quite sure she'd put out for a couple of Snap-on spanners or a set of new window seals -she's that bad.

Anyway, I digress. £11k 2 year old Polo? No thanks.

If it's still within warranty I would always buy private or from an auction. For example, there's a Polo coming up soon and Blackbushe car auctions:

I think its a bit of stretch to say that because some chicks dig a guy in a Ferrari that a Polo GTI might have a similar effect over an SE. You'd need to get it into conversation for a start which could come across as a bit geeky.

That said why would you be interested in women who make choices that shallow anyway?

I got tired of page 3 models and Towie birds (I suspect you'll relate to them) diving into the passenger seats of my cars at traffic lights, the wife wasn't happy at all but that's what happens when you drive a special car.....honest.

I'm pretty sure most women (or the ones I meet anyway) can spot a GTI badge (or whatever) at twenty paces.

I'm not saying I would be interested in such women, or am that bothered by their motives, I just don't get why you are debating the point? A blokes ability to earn is often indicated by his car, women know this. They also don't want to be driven around in a crap car when their best girlfriend is in something better.
Anyway, I thought this was motors, not the "why do women like scatter cushions" forum

That looks really smart. If I had to buy a newish small car, this is where my money would by going. Albeit, not with a diesel engine! (many, many issues). Build quality is right up there in this car. Love them, just a shame the GTI is very expensive for what is a very limp wristed engine.

Yep they seem like decent cars. Of course, modern Polos are the same size as the Golfs we grew up with.

Most women don't give a stuff about your car, not unless you're a teenager and even then, speaking from when I was one in 1543BC they didn't car much then. I am more than aware that some women are materialistic and will gravitate towards money but most aren't in my experience. We are talking about Golfs and Polos not Porsches and Ferrari's after all.
