The award lost all it's credibility when Sneijder didn't win in 2010
Do try to use something beyond a pointless list, firstly in the world cup Muller in his first world cup played outstandingly well in every game and the only time Germany looked poor was when he didn't play(for iirc a BS second yellow in the previous game) he also got 3 assists to Sneijders 1, and he scored and was involved in the build up of some fantastic goals. One of sneijders goals was clear as day a Melo own goal, so first of all Sneijder only scored 4 according to anyone with errm, vision, secondly most of his goals were crap, thirdly he shot constantly and mostly missed the target and in terms of creating goals for others he wasn't very good, he was also absent in the final.
He had a 4 goal 6 assists season in the league, a single goal in the cup and was simply vastly over rated over a few great goals(and VERY little else) in a team that made him look good, not the other way around. He also had a half a terrible season under Benitez.
While I can see how Messi won, based on influence in the season between the two Ronaldo should have got it, he lead Madrid to the title.
As for the World XI, a complete joke. While I'm in no way a Chelsea fan, how can the European Champions get zero representation yet Barcelona win the Copa del Ray and get five players, Real Madrid La Liga and also get five. The quality of opposition in La Liga outside of the top two was non existent last season.
Yup, you can see from Real this year, Barca would win the title this year without Messi most likely, Real would not have come close to winning the title last year without Ronaldo. Ronaldo is FAR more important to Real and dragged a meh team kicking and screaming above the team with Messi in his best every goal scoring season and a great rest of the team... that is how freaking awesome a season Ronaldo had, on top of a great Euro's and great in every performance. Ronaldo had an epic season in a worse team than Messi.
Chelsea though, bumbled their way with anti football into the final, some epic performances, sure and Cole was excellent under Di Matteo, but rubbish up until then. No one at chelsea had an awesome season.
Marcelo can't defend, Ramos is a thug and Pique is average at best, the La Liga love is daft, though the EPL being overlooked wasn't. There were better defenders in Germany and Italy who deserved a look in for team of the year, don't think Iniesta should have been involved either, another player who is over rated, selfish and not a very good shot.
He's a very good player, just no where near as good as people make out. MOST of his seasons he has a shots to goal ratio of worse than 1:10, his recent seasons goals:shots in the league have been ( 1/20, 2/49, 8/45, 1/28, 4/45, 3/43, 6/28, 0/24, 2/15). thats 9 seasons in which his finishing was completely embarrassing in 4 of them, poor in 3 of them and only decent in the other 2, does that sound like a player in line for the best individual prize in football for an out and out attacker?
Only two of those can be considered "good" seasons and neither were particularly high scoring for a guy who frequently players as a wide striker in 4-3-3 rather than central midfield, while 2 of the three central midfielders frequently(most season) out score AND out assist him. He can be truly outstanding ON the ball, like immense, going around 4 players, but then his final ball is frequently poor, his shooting IS poor and for the amount of the ball he has and the positions his immense dribbling gets him into, he SHOULD have a shedload of goals and assists every year, and he would do if he was a great player.
lol, I completely missed Alonso in there, a completely useless footballer, beyond fouling people because he was out of position he did basically nothing at all for Real last year.
