Play.com to Cease Retail Trading

So its going to turn into an Amazon Marketplace type site then?

Its reason for being has long since died out and people use Amazon mostly nowadays.

Haven't used it for quite some time. Haven't had the need to either.

It was good when in it's good times, but the occasional browsing, for curious-ness always left me feeling like it's been dead for a while now.

The interesting thing here is that not many of these online discount retailers are actually THAT profitable.

So we have high street retailers going to the wall because they can't compete with the ultra low pricing offered by internet retailers that can't turn a decent profit and eventually end up going to the wall or giving up.

Leaving us with what exactly? An empty highstreet and nowhere to buy online either?

Excellent.

Play became big because they exploited the Jersey Loophole and were able to offer DVDs dirt cheap.

In the early 2000s I always used to use Play, but as time has gone on I now no longer buy DVDs like I did all the time when they were fairly new, as I'm sure was also the case for many other people. Secondly, other retailers are now just as competitive, so Play no longer has that advantage anymore.

Buying habits have changed and without the loophole, I guess the only way was down.

Nor I. Though I have had some good prices on things from them over the years.
Will Amazon be affected? I don't even know where Amazon are based, if I'm honest.

Didn't see this coming. Ouch.

I must admit I haven't ordered from them in a while as when you look around at other places they were very similar on price with only the downside of lengthy delivery times from Play.

so essentially now all it's going to be is a place for sellers to sell under their 'roof'.

Amazon won't be going anywhere any time soon, they just keep getting stronger.

Regular play shopper here. I enjoyed their speedy no nonsense ordering system, I will miss this.

I spent thousands with the original play.com but it's downturn was swift and brutal. I stopped using them a few years ago.

It was a great way to get R1 DVD's easily.

Hmm, with this and HMV, I'm slightly worried about the competition in the market...

Steam will always provide a solid competition against Amazon, but there can't be many people left.

For PC games especially that is... (supermarkets don't tend to cater to them)

Thats a shame, I remember when these guys started. It made getting hold of region 1 dvd's so much easier. But I guess with the closure of the Jersey loop hole and the reduction in demade for R1 dvd's their relevance faded. Amazon really have become the catch all shop for so many items.

Didn't expect that! I bought some stuff from them just yesterday because they have a sale on, but before that it's been a few years since I last bought from them.
