iPad Mini...

macrumours reporting ipadmini retina in march, also ipad 5 who knows???

I'm not sure I like the new 6 months refresh, if they do go with this I'll be annoyed if they drop "older" devices sooner. If they don't drop them any sooner then I don't mind the increase in releases.
I just don't want a device I can't use after two years of owning it!

Even though I do really like my one I am quite tempted to sell it off soon, the screen really does annoy me. I think that is more down to me being so used to my iPhone and iPad screen which are both top class. Probably me being more anal than anything else.

I wouldn't be surprised to see another one in March, always thought it would make more sense to keep the iPad and iPhone release apart by 6 months, people less likely to buy an iPhone and iPad at same time but if they were 6 months apart I think more would. Also from a cash flow perspective better to keep them apart I think. Would be annoyed though as I was with the iPad 4 release, 6 month cycle I think is a bit too much.

It'll be a Tech Analyst making a punt to get his name in lights.
Every month someone claims to know when they are launched, next week it'll be "iPhone 6 due in June" etc...

Got to generate web traffic somehow ;)

I seriously doubt they'll release an updated Mini in Easter. Would be crazy to do it this early considering the issues with stock over Christmas.

IMO They'll launch a retina version at a higher price point. Much like we have the iPad 2 and the iPad w/ Retina. Their will be two iPad mini's at different price points.

Would not be surprised to see this around Easter at all. Also need to consider manufacturing production capacity and problems with yields. Hence Apple rolls out the easier to produce iPad mini first. gets on top of supply etc.

It isn't a 6 month cycle. The 4th gen was an iteration albeit with some fairly big changes. The iPad 2 also had a spec bump mid cycle it just wasn't as big as this one. The next iPad will probably follow the iPhone 5/iPad mini Alu back and hopefully edge to edge screen too.

Aye so it could be

£269 iPad mini
£329 iPad (maybe discontinue?)
£329 iPad mini Retina
£399 iPad Retina

technology moves on

I'd buy a mini tomorrow if it had a retina

just can't bring myself to buy one with the feeling/rumours of a retina version just round the corner

Well I took the plunge and got one today, awesome so far, much better for me with regard to form factor / weight. Pretty spot on.

Very happy, just playing about with different apps, not had an iPad for ages so looking at apps for it.

That doesn't have to be though - Apple are improving batteries all the time.

Improving batteries - no. They just make them bigger.
There has been no innovation in battery technology for years.

The iPad 3 increased in size and weight from the 2 because of the display.
Read the Anantech article about the retina mini. It's more of a challenge then it appears - more powerful backlight, larger LoC and a larger more powerful battery. In the current size, weight and price a retina mini is just not going to happen this year.

For many, me included, the form factor is the most important thing about the device. I bought an iPad mini not for its screen but because of its size and weight. No competing device offers what the mini does in this respect. If it was fatter, heavier and more power hungry but used a retina display I probably wouldn't have been interested, despite initially moaning about the screen. The standard screen is sub par in terms of resolution but you do get used to it and I stopped moaning once I realised the technical sacrifice a better screen would bring.

So tempted to get one but potential upgrade I'm March makes me wonder, however the screen is pretty good do not sure hoe much a retina screen will benefit it.

Hmm maybe I'm talking myself into one lol

I thought same

current thoughts are 3G Nexus 7 - then re-look at Minis in summer :) (hopefully retinas out then)

We are evaluating bboth in work well my colleague is and he prefers the mini as the 4:3 screen is more useful for office productivity and when using the internet, however for media both are on a levelish playing field.

You won't find the screen to be an issue in general use. The retina screen would be a nice upgrade, but it's not going to suddenly make the regular mini screen rubbish.

Plus, there are no guarantees about when it will be upgraded anyway. The current demand is absolutely phenomenal, they won't be in a rush to launch a new model.
