Had a house fire - dealing with the aftermath?

Eh? Tony Williams is/was Lucy Bee?:eek:

No, but was formerly known as NW-Skinhead IIRC.

OP - using a butane gas heater in a closed environment like a loft is stupid anyway.

However, I am calling shenanigans over all of this. Your OP has more focus on replacing your internet and mobile phone rather than the horrific burns you claim to have received on your hands (no way that they would be anything but).

If it is true, your house isn't going to be habitable for a long time.

I don't think this is correct. That guy did have a name change but not to Tony Williams but my terrible memory refuses to remind me what it did become.

Anyway, Mr Williams has some truly amazing stories. They're almost too good to be believed!

Sorry to hear about your accident. It will take a while with your house being a soggy ashtray at the mo but insurance should sort it out if you're adequately covered :)

The question I can't work out is why butane? Gas cylinders are really expensive, the last 15kg butane I bought was £35. Surely it must be cheaper to run an electric heater?

My sister had a nasty fire last year. It started under a bed and caught on very quickly. Gutted the room where it started completely ruined the decor of the whole house. The heat was so intense at the source of the fire, it peeled the plaster off the wall, completely burned all the celing through into the loft. The window melted and flopped out, heat was so intense, the electric shower unit in the bathroom next door melted due to the heat radiating through the tiles.

That was just the start. Firemen came and extinguished it and that caused even more water damage. Plaster board falling off the ceiling and crumbling everywhere whilst being trodden in by the firemen. Every window and door in the house had to be replaced, it needed decorating from top to bottom with new carpets throughout. Even the roofing tiles needed replacing. Most of the electrical appliances had to be replaced because the insurance wouldn't insure her again unless they were renewed. I was dying to sneak that brand new panasonic plasma out which they only had for 2 weeks before the fire. It was written off and replaced for a new one.

The good side is, the insurance paid for the lot. Quarter of a million £ iirc because it's actually 2 houses knocked into one. They even had tens of 1000's worth of extra work done including a loft conversion, partition walls, on suite bathroom, brand new kitchen etc. It's a beautiful house now. It was nice before as you can see, but it's stunning now. I'm very happy for them because it was a damn hard to go through. They even say they're a lot better off now than before the fire. The house is done up exactly how they wanted it, but it was a painful thing to go through at the time. The whole of their lively hood rested in the verdict of the insurances decision. Luckily, they had a very good insurance cover which paid for rented accommodation whilst the house was being done up. It took around 6 months to complete the house.

Every other room in the house looked like this, so you can see what it meant when the word gutted is mentioned.

I've got a second cousin whose house burnt down on Christmas day of all days about 10 years ago when they were out visiting relatives. Not the best time, if there was ever a good time for it to happen.

I will upload photos. I had a gas fire there for 3 years, I use it as the loft is a CONVERTED BEDROOM it has windows and a lot of space. IT COULD BE WORSE it appears just the loft was fully messed up. Well consoles printer comp phone tv bed clothes. thing is lucky Ive been able to retrieve some items that were in cupboards.

Another thing that morning was 1800eu I got (for the holiday) burnt.......gone....... we got back and returned to find them all are smoke damaged/sooted/damp. Travelex cannot refund them only BUY them and SELL them back (-gotd knows how much). From what I know all banks that handle eu can just swap them over. ALL notes have serials and mag strips visable. So this is like barcleys hsbc and Santander?

Theres no electrics atm and different electrictions say different things. The first was OUR guy saying its all old cabling and the electric in the loft shouldn't be replaced, the whole house should as old cabling on new cabling is dodgy. Old cabling being keeping the electrics in the house bar the lofts he can produce a certificate replacing all. The cabling is 25yr old. The second guy said there wasn't much problem finding the lofts and just replacing it and keeping the house..... but the second guy is FROM the insurance company.

Aye yeah our problems.

Smell. The house obviously smells still of smoke when there we open windows doors. I was thinking of getting 5kg of bicarb off the bay and dump that everywhere.

Damp. Got 10x £1 cheap Asda dehumidifiers and dumped about.

We wait on what the builder later says. Weve taken up and cleared the room and one under was damaged alittle with damp and the celing started to fall in and did, so celing repair new bed and carpet. (carpet was very wet)

Then most would just need plastering, painting.

I will find photos

I feel sorry for your predicament Tony, but really how many more threads do we need on this and what you're going to buy? Can't we just have one?

OP needs to kill himself, clearly he truly sucks at life :/

I mean what kind of muppet would put a blanket over an open flame??...mind truly boggles.

I like how the OP goes on to describe his broadband/3G/FIBRE dealings in the middle of a rant about his home going up in smoke. LOL.
