I considered applying back in school when, believe it or not, I was far more arrogant than I am today. Now I just don't see the point, so you get in and get the opportunity to join focus groups about whatever you are interested in, and do a bit of networking. These things are possible without mensa, and don't restrict you to the small section of society that have also bothered to join.
That and you have to pay for the privilege.

Out of interest, can we get a poll here?
1) Member
2) Could be a member if I could be bothered
3) I don't think I would get in.

Its meant to be the top 2% of IQs, so it would be interesting to see how we rate ourselves, I'm guessing a lot more than 2% will choose option 2.

I can put up a poll if you want but I think there's probably at least a fourth option there - I don't know if I'd get in or not (and I don't care)?

I'm closest to the fourth option of any of them, I wouldn't presume I could get in if I could be bothered but equally I wouldn't instinctively definitely rule out my chances without knowing more about it.

I wouldn't presume I could get in if I could be bothered...

Be 100% honest, is that really true? :p

Being 100% honest, I'd be pretty disheartened if I tried to get in but didn't, even though I wouldn't want to join. I guess that's not only arrogance on my behalf, but lazy arrogance, which is even worse :D

I don't care either way but I doubt I'd get in as my knowledge is more hands on than brain activity. :p

I don't need to join a club to let you know that I'm smarter than you and I don't care whether you are a member or not. :p

Is there an online quiz which could be done and post the (honest) results of that?

Google returns a large selection but I've no idea which ones are worthwhile.

Being honest I don't know enough about the tests, I've been fortunate enough to pass the majority of the various tests I've taken but I really don't know if I'd be able to pass the Mensa tests. If I desperately wanted to do something and failed because of a lack of ability or preparation then I'd be disheartened I'm sure but that's not really the case here, a "formal" rating in the form of acceptance or rejection to a club isn't something that would affect me much since I'm still as dumb or as smart as I was before I took the test.

Don't get me wrong - if for some reason that I can't comprehend at the moment I was to apply then I'd want to do my best and I'd try to pass but that's because like most people I prefer to succeed than fail.

I'm sure when I did my test there were 4 sections.

Word based. puddle is to pond as lake is to ..... [4 choices to pick from]
Spatial Awareness
Problem solving/logic

and I can't for the life of me remember the 4th (if there was more than the 3).

each one was timed, you had X mins to complete each section of it then it was collected.

Spatial Awareness and logic were my strong points. I struggle doing crosswords, but sudoku's I can fly through.

A big issue for me was brain damage i receieved when I was 16 due to being attacked for defending a girl. my memory is awful now, doctors think it might be related but nothing can be done about it. I definitely wouldn't get in now.

I voted : I don't know if I'd get in or not (and I don't care)

I haven't got a clue what my IQ is - I would be interested to see where I'd rank, but I can't seem to be bothered about going to take a test :p

I just imagine it to be a club full of boring intellectuals, and it's something for them to bring up in conversation at a party to let everyone know what a tool he/she is :p

what you imagine is fair enough, and it might be pretty spot on, I never attended any meets.

However, why does being part of a club make you a tool?

Do you play footie for a team in a Sunday league? tool
Are you a member of a photography club? tool

etc

No need to label people just because they join clubs to be with like minded folk.

Wow way to take what I said out of context :p

Its a bit silly when the premise behind the club is flawed to begin with.

Supposing we start quantifying 'beauty' and develop a controversial and arguably flawed test to assign people a 'Beauty Quotient' (some combination of facial symmetry, distances between eyes, shape of nose etc... that we've decided define 'beauty')... then some people form a beautiful persons club with entry dictated by your 'BQ' level.

Would the club not be slightly farcical... meaningless to the average Victoria's Secret model... might bring joy to the fat chick who's nose happens to be perfectly proportioned resulting in a high score. Likewise I'm sure the binman who's great at crosswords can gain some satisfaction from his mensa badge....

I predict a large sector of OcUK will fall under the 'I could if I wanted to' banner :p

Which is amusing as people are deriding mensa members for being *** and big heads. ;)

This is what I was getting at in my last post, it's a rather hypocritical position :D

I guess 'I could if I wanted to' can be split into two further categories.
  • You openly say so
  • You guard your view so as not to appear arrogant
The latter category would be quietly confident people - it's the former that is more douchey.

The only people who can really say they could are people who've bothered to sit the test (and declined to join) or who've scored highly in a similar standardised IQ test.

The answer for myself and most people on here is simply:

"I don't know if I'd get in or not (and I don't care)"
