Should I spend my HMV gift card ASAP?

According to Martin Lewis (MSE) Vouchers are already being turned away as of this evening at stores that where open on orders from Head Office.

They have not appointed an administrator yet, so this is currently incorrect. This will presumably take place tommorrow, so if you have a gift card, its probably time to get up early :p

They announced Deloitte?

Methinks you shouldv'e used all of it :(

Sad to see a big music one like HMV go - their history goes back a LONG way.

I did!

Did you use them online or in store? The BBC news article says that as of this morning, they are no longer being accepted.

E-wallet balances can only be used online. It may be that they're continuing to treat the e-wallet differently than physical gift vouchers or perhaps I used it just in time.

I hope HMV will be brought out by a company just like Game Group did. HMV was a really good place to sample good music and their friendly staff always where there to help me when buying gifts for people. Now thanks to Amazon and other online cheap retailers, they have gone bust and people are not willing to pay for more expensive DVD's, CD's and Games. Its a great shop and shame to see it go!

The issue is HMV is still successful in terms of sales and customer numbers - it's just saddled with massive debts which are crippling the business.

It's true what someone said in the jessops thread. They must have sold gift vouchers for Christmas knowing that they probably will never be honoured.

Surely this is bordering on fraud?

It would be like knowing you're about to be declared bankrupt so going out and getting as many loans/credit cards as you could.

Obtaining services dishonestly

Section 11 of the Act makes it a statutory offence to obtain services dishonestly; meaning that services which were to be paid for were obtained with the knowledge or intention that no payment would be made. A person found guilty of this will be liable to a fine or imprisonment for up to twelve months on summary conviction (six months in Northern Ireland), or a fine or imprisonment for up to five years on conviction on indictment.

Ha ha, I went in last week with a £5 card left over from last year knowing they were going under, and honestly couldn't find anything I wanted which wasn't more than £5 overpriced (even s/h games when there's a CEX down the road).

I ended up binning it.

I would just go for the most expensive Apple product you can get as they retain their resale value the best.

Alternatively go in and clean up on any sale they've got going on.
