Will it be worth the wait?

So I posted a thread on here t'other day and thanks to the great help from people on here I ended up ordering some kit to start upgrading my PC and they should be arriving today.

I only ordered a motherboard, processor and PSU with the intention of waiting to around march time (birthday coincides with payday) and dropping the money on a 7970.

(original thread)

However I've got the bug and I've got some dosh saved up so I've started weighing up my options, they are as follows:
  • Drop the cash on a 7970 now
  • Drop a little less cash on a 7950
  • Wait until March to get a 7970 (Heard rumours that new generation of cards will be start showing up around then so there might be a price drop)

Opinions, what should I do people? Reckon my HD 5770 will keep me ticking over for now?

The 5770 will easily hit bottlenecks at 1080P. A decent 7950 would be a good choice if you like high fps at high / max settings.

I don't think there is much in it between a 6850 and a 5770 and I know I have to keep settings between medium and high to get my happy 40 fps at 1080P.

Right, so I'd be best off sticking with the 5770 for now and wait on for a 7970 in a few months?

I'd stick with the 5770 if it's doing the job for now. It might not be amazing, but right now you wouldn't be getting enough upgrade per-pound: you'll be spending a lot of money for a moderate amount of performance.

It's true that you can spend forever waiting for the next set of hardware, because there's always a better lot coming up, but if you wait until the next generation is out you'll get a fair bit more bang for your buck. It's not about upgrading as often as you can, nor about saving all the money you can, it's about upgrading at the right time.

Thanks, I sort of knew that but I just needed someone to put it in writing for me.

I'll just hide my wallet for a while

If you don't need the upgrade wait for the next series of GPU's to come out. The new ATI ones should be coming around the same time as Haswell I believe so mid 2013.

Whether or not 7*** series prices drop will be another question. I don't think they will however. For example the 6*** series didn't really drop nor the 5** series for Nvidia.

Ah right, well either way, I'll sit back and wait for a while, one upgrade at a time...Got to install my Motherboard and CPU yet, that will be the first test.
