Got my Nexus 10 last Monday and just thought I'd post a few impressions after a week of usage
Firstly, the device itself is gorgeous and a lot better looking (especially in terms of build quality) than when you view it online in reviews etc. I was definitely right to not bother with a smaller 7" tablet and just go for the larger 10" instead, which makes a huge difference when using the browser or any app with split content (i.e. gReader or Falcon Pro which split the screen to open up the web view inside the app instead of just opening the default browser). Weight is good too, can use the device one-handed fine in portrait mode, but two-handed with landspace mode makes the best use of the device and OS. And the display on the Nexus 10 is an absolute gem, and I've certaintly never owned a device with this high a DPI, so text rendering is really smooth and apps that use the displays resolution properly look great on the display. (Only problem is now my 1280x800 resolution MacBook Pro feels noticablely more 'Non-Retina' now…)
In comparison to the brief time spent using an iPad (just testing out friends iPads whilst round at their houses etc.) am glad to say that the Nexus 10 is up there in terms of hardware quality and especially value for money, and as an Android phone user since mid 2010 am definitely more used to Androids ecosystem instead of iOS. The only downfall at the moment on the software side is the noticable difference in terms of the quality of apps for some services. Great example is the difference between the Google+ app (great layout/flow and makes good use of the devices resolution) and then the stock Facebook app (massively stretched posts/photos, poor navigation and other issues). In time hopefully more developers take note of how Google has optimised its stock apps for this size resolutions and amend their apps in the same manner.
Other things to note:
- The stock status bar layout with the 3 navigation buttons placed in the centre is an absolute joke, and as a result I had my device rooted and the latest version of Paranoid Android rom installed within an hour of unboxing the device. Tablet UI is the certainly way to go in terms of comfortable usage so you don't end up having to move your left hand to the centre of the device for navigation. Having PA installed is also a benefit in terms of being able to change the DPI of individual apps, which I started playing about with yesterday.
- Similarly the stock keyboard in 4.2 doesn't work at all on a 10" tablet, far too stretched and lacks being able to long-press for numbers/symbols. Easily solved though with a 3rd-party keyboard app, using Swiftkey 4 Beta in split keyboard mode.
- Been having a few issues with Wifi signal dropping and had a few random reboots when using the browser, but there's a thread on XDA with other users experiencing the similar issues so hopefully 4.2.2 will help fix some of these.
But my absolute biggest gripe with the device so far is Flash support. Yes you can download the last version of Flash and it installs fine, but the performance and random hick-ups/crashing when using flash in apps that allow support for it isn't great. And really it's a bit of a shame, as if Adobe were to just update the plugin and Google support flash in Chrome etc then the problem wouldn't exist. (Kinda makes me interested to try out a Windows 8 tablet to see how it handles Flash…)
Overall though a great product, and being my first tablet I'm really enjoying using it for certain tasks that I'm no longer picking up my Macbook for (like Google Reader, Twitter, PDF Magazines, light web browsing) and hopefully add more to that list of uses with new apps etc
